Spirit of King of Pop to thrill Lithgow Halloween ‘16

Michael Jackson impersonator Jason Jackson will perform at Lithgow Halloween `16. Photo: David Hill, Headline Publicity.
The spirit of the late King of Pop will inject a thrilling spark into Lithgow Halloween `16 when hundreds of Michael Jackson fans take part in a dance-off in Main St on Saturday, October 29.

The national record bid for the greatest number of costumed people to dance to the song Thriller will be a highlight of the annual community festival.

Organised and hosted by Lithgow City Council, with support from local sponsors including Lithgow McDonald’s, Centennial Coal and Energy Australia, the event will again feature spectacular Vivid-style lighting displays and spooky decorations, the main shopping strip will be transformed into a fun-filled pedestrian zone with themed precincts, non-stop entertainment and a community Trick or Treat activity for children.

Lithgow City Council Tourism Manager Kellie Barrow said: ``We do like to party here in Lithgow, especially when it involves themes and dressing up.

``But our parties are not exclusive: everyone is invited, everyone is welcome and everyone is catered for.’’

As in previous years, the family-friendly Lithgow Halloween `16 will include something for everyone, with a range of free community events in public spaces through to ticketed events at private venues.

``We’re proud of our history and what the council, local businesses and residents have achieved together in beautifying Lithgow in recent years and we want to share our town with visitors.’’

Ms Barrow encouraged locals and visitors to fully immerse themselves in the festival spirit and dress up for the occasion as a ghoulish zombie, monster, freaky vampire, fantasy character or loveable fairytale personality, goblin or fairy.

She also urged everyone to take part in the Australian record attempt for the largest number of costumed people to dance to the Michael Jackson song Thriller.

``The record currently stands at about 500 people. Let’s beat it!’’

She recommended visitors stay overnight in the area to fully explore the surprisingly diverse range of scenery, dining options and activities available in Lithgow and surrounds including the Back to Hartley event at Hartley Historic Site on the way to Sydney on Sunday, October 30.

Dads Entice Kids with Overseas Trips for Quality Time

G Adventures, the world's largest adventure travel company, has found more fathers are paying for their son or daughter to come overseas with them in a bid to spend more time with their increasingly independent children.

The number of fathers booking overseas adventures with their adult children increased 17% between 2013 and 2015 and continues to grow as parents find they are spending less time with their millennial children.

But the duos are not looking for a typical fly-and-flop holiday, with fathers more likely to book an active adventure, explained Adrian Piotto, Managing Director G Adventures Australia and New Zealand.

“Our most popular trip for fathers and their adult children is definitely the Inca Trail in Peru. Travellers on this adventure often find that the extra support from a family member not only makes it easier to get to the top, but also makes the experience much more special.”

Adventures in Morocco and Antarctica are also popular among father-son and father-daughter travellers with G Adventures and the company has enjoyed overwhelming positive feedback from the pairs in all destinations.

“My dad found reaching the highest peak of the Inca Trail, Dead Woman's Pass, hard, and he took longer than the rest of the group. But, as he finished the last 50 metres he was cheered on the whole way by our G adventure group - all ages and nationalities. There were tears of joy from our younger Norwegian companions, and nearly from my Dad himself when he made it! The moment truly encapsulated the genuine feeling of community and togetherness of the group, and is one that I know I will never forget. A priceless experience,” Australian traveller Adam said who travelled on Amazon to the Andes with his dad.

“Reaching Machu Picchu and finishing the trek was one of the most emotional and rewarding experiences of my life. An added bonus was to spend two weeks with my son and share the excitement and thrills with him. The views where mind blowing,” Adam's father, Alan said.

Adventurers of all ages are catered for with G Adventures who offer Family style trips as well as Active and Classic trips and National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures which are proving very popular with all travellers.

Picture Kangaroo Island like never before on new Photographic Tour

In a budding photographers dream, Kangaroo Island Odysseys has partnered with professional photographer, Andy Rasheed from EyeFood Photography, to offer an amazing three day, all inclusive, Kangaroo Island Photographic Tour. Tours are limited to only seven places and depart Saturday September 17th and 22nd October, 2016.

Over three days photography enthusiasts will visit popular and iconic locations such as Remarkable Rocks and Seal Bay Conservation Park, see amazing wildlife and stunning landscapes, as well as discovering some of Kangaroo Island's hidden gems all while learning to take better photographs and enjoying the beauty of South Australia's Kangaroo Island.

Andy will be on location with the intimate group to help mentor and develop photography skills with hands-on photographic tuition. Andy will also run various workshops over the three days focussing on philosophy and approach, using natural light, composition and night photography.

According to Donna Gauci, General Manager of SeaLink South Australia, "Andy was the perfect choice of photographer for this tour, as not only is he a specialist location photographer, but nature has been his constant theme throughout his career."

"We also wanted to keep these tours intimate so guests would really take away valuable photography lessons and receive that one-on-one mentoring from Andy. With only seven places available on each tour I think we will achieve this." Continues Donna.

As with all Kangaroo Island Odysseys tours, the group will be led by an experienced local guide who is passionate about Australia's native flora and fauna and knowledgeable about Kangaroo Island's wildlife and ecosystem.

The Photographic Tour will be transported around the island in a 4X4 modern luxurious vehicle exclusively designed to allow the group access to restricted areas of Kangaroo Island's national parks and private properties where native animals roam freely in their natural habitat.

The tour includes all meals and choice of accommodation at Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat in an Eco Lodge room or Courtyard suite.

The three day, all-inclusive Kangaroo Island Photographic Tour departs Saturday September 17th and 22nd October, 2016 and prices start from $1,959 per person, twin/double and from $2,159 per person in a single room.

Prices include return travel to Kangaroo Island with SeaLink (flight options available), travel in a luxury air-conditioned 4x4 Mercedes Benz Sprinter, 2 night's accommodation at Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, nightly 2 course dinner, daily continental breakfast and lunches (with wine), refreshments, 3 days of photographic tuition and workshops on location, take photographs of iconic Kangaroo Island locations and supervised landscape and wildlife photography.

Silk Air makes Laos a little bit more accessible for Australians

Silk Air makes Laos a little bit more accessible for Australians

SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, recently announced it will launch services from Singapore to Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos, from November 2016.

According to Asia travel specialists Insider Journeys, which have been operating regular tours in Laos since 1996, the services will positively impact visitor numbers to the country, which has traditionally been more difficult to access than its neighbours.

Unlike Vietnam and Cambodia, both of which have seen strong tourism arrivals in the last 10 years, aided by iconic tourist drawcards such as UNESCO-listed Halong Bay and Angkor Wat, Laos has remained somewhat of an intrepid destination for travellers seeking an 'off the beaten path' experience. This is despite having two UNESCO listings of its own: Luang Prabang town set on the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers and Vat Phou and Associated Ancient Settlements within the Champasak Cultural Landscape.

"Without a doubt, the majority of our clients who have travelled to Laos with us rave about the place after they've been there," says Paul Hole, Managing Director of Insider Journeys.

"Luang Prabang is the country's standout destination, which is not surprising given its numerous attractions such as the atmospheric night-market, the fantastic dining options, and the many Buddhist temples filled with saffron-robed monks. Travellers are particularly entranced witnessing the monks make their pilgrimage through the village streets each morning to collect alms from devotees in the ancient ceremony called takbat."

The low number of Australian visitors, compared with Vietnam and Cambodia, can be partly attributed to the fact there are no direct flights from Australia to Laos.

"We've noticed that access has historically made it harder for Australians wanting to visit Laos," says Mark Lee, Laos Product Manager at Insider Journeys.

"The absence of direct flights or same-day connections by major airlines, especially to Luang Prabang, has been a deterrent for Australian travellers.

"While we encourage our clients to visit Indochina in one trip whenever possible to experience the diversity and beauty of Indochina, the logistics of flying in and out of Laos, and the need to sometimes backtrack overnight to Hanoi or Vientiane has discouraged travellers who are time-poor. We're really excited about this agreement between Silk Air and Lao Airlines, and think it will definitely strengthen the country's tourism arrival numbers."

Insider Journeys offer three standalone Laos small group journey itineraries, as well as a number of Indochina cross-border trips that include Vietnam and Cambodia. The new flights into Laos by SilkAir are ideal for the 6 day Highlights of Laos, 19 day Indochina Explorer and 15 day Vietnam & Laos Explorer small group journey itineraries.

Special offer

Insider Journeys is offering 15% off any Indochina Small Group Journey booked and deposited by 30 September 2016, for travel prior to 31 December 2016.

Normally from $6,395* per person twin share, save over $1,000 AUD per person, twin share on select departures of the 19 day Indochina Explorer Small Group Journey.

Europe river cruising deals

#Cruise Europe in Ultimate #Luxury

The slow travel movement might very well have its roots in river cruising. The gentle undulation of the river is an ideal way to meander through the continent, following the rich history and changing landscape of Europe at a more meaningful pace.

The famous rivers of Europe have seen empires rise and fall, and have endured through shifting borders and alliances. Seeing the continent from the water has its advantages too – small ships can traverse narrow passages and river cruising itineraries allow more frequent port stops to lesser-known locales to explore the countryside and charming towns along the way.

Not surprisingly, the romance of river cruising continues to swell the imagination of culturally curious Australian travelers. Regardless of which European region you choose, from an ever evolving range of inspired itineraries, this is sure to be a trip‑of‑a-lifetime.

Like the very rivers they cruise upon, each Europe river cruising operator has its own stories and unique character, which Travel Associates will help you discover.

Click the link below for comparisons between the companies and ask me any more specific questions, then click below for latest earlybird deals for next year, remember you don;t have to land and depart with the cruises to utilise the airfare deals.
