Air New Zealand to fly Sydney-Rotorua

Air New Zealand has just announced the commencement of direct flights between Sydney and the central NZ north island resort town of Rotorua.

The carrier will operate a 152-seat A320 on the route, flying twice a week from 19 Dec 2009.

"Rotorua is an iconic tourism destination and well known amongst Australian travellers. We see the potential for good passenger numbers from Australia and the continued strength of inbound tourism from there has lent weight to our decision," said Air New Zealand gm Tasman Pacific Airline, Glen Sowry.

He said the new services would also make Rotorua significantly more accessible for visitors from Asia, while during the ski season it would provide a new option for Australian skiers heading for the central North Island ski fields at Mt Ruapehu.

"Although the Tasman remains one of our most challenging markets we will continue to look for opportunities to grow visitor numbers into New Zealand, particularly where there is a strong community desire to support the service," Sowry added.

Lead-in online fares start at $249pp one way and are now available at www.airnewzealand.com.au.
