The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai To Stage Fantastic Loy Krathong & Yi Peng Celebrarions In The Capital Of The Ancient Lanna Kingdom

Thailand is set to celebrate one of its most enchanting annual festivals in November. Known around the kingdom as Loy Krathong and in Chiang Mai as Yi Peng, this picturesque festival is observed on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar.
Loy Krathong_resize

While in 2014 this falls on Thursday 6 November, in some places the celebrations will take place over three days from Wednesday 5 November to Friday 7 November. This includes Chiang Mai, the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, where the festival is celebrated with particular passion.

Throughout Thailand, Loy Krathong sees people place decorated candle-lit floats called krathongs on rivers, canals and lakes for good luck and blessings and to honour the Goddess of Water Phra Mae Khongkha. Loy literally means ‘to float’ and the floating away of the krathong - which can contain food, betel nuts, flowers, joss sticks and coins along with the lit candle for venerating Buddha with light - is symbolic of letting go of one’s ill feelings and starting afresh for the year ahead.

Yi Peng is also a time for making merit and people launch illuminated Lanna-style ‘floating lanterns’ called khom loy into the air. It is a magical sight to behold in Chiang Mai, with the waterways and evening sky lit up with the many flickering lights of Loy Krathong floats and Yi Peng lanterns.

The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai has some wonderful Loy Krathong and Yi Peng activities planned. The Loy Krathong Celebration at Le Grand Lanna Thai restaurant on Thursday, 6 November  promises  to  be  a  magical  evening.  Priced  at  THB  2,300  net  per person, the program includes a welcome drink, traditional dance show, a krathong to float and khom loy to release, and an authentic northern Thai dinner buffet.

Narupon Promsorn 002The evening also includes the holding of a Lanna-style market called Kad Mua at the hotel’s picturesque Bua Kham Pond or The Lotus Pond. Kad Mua means a market that sells many different things, yet it is so much more. Bustling with exotic sights, sounds and aromas, a Kad Mua provides a charming look into the local society, culture and lifestyles of Chiang Mai and its people.

Following the inaugural Kad Mua on Thursday 6 November, Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai will hold a weekly Kad Mua every Friday and Saturday from 5 pm to 7 pm on the lawn in front of the Prayer Hall. The market will feature a collection of stalls selling quality arts & crafts made by local artisans, local-style clothing and outfits, handmade accessories and more. Adding to the festive Kad Mua atmosphere will be live Lanna music and delicious northern Thai cuisine to try.

The weekly Kad Mua will add another fascinating element to the Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai’s iconic role as a living showcase of Lanna heritage and culture, while at the same time further the hotel’s ongoing support of the local community.

Charming Loy Krathong Offer
Available for stays between 5 and 8 November 2014 is the Charming Loy Krathong offer. This includes accommodation in a choice of Suites or Villas, daily American buffet breakfast for two persons at Akaligo and the Loy Krathong Celebration dinner at Le Grand Lanna for two
persons. The price ranges from THB 24,500* per night for a Colonial Suite up to THB 37,500* per night for a Grand Deluxe Villa with Pool.

*Rate is per Suite/Villa per night and subject to 18.5% service charge, applicable government tax and provincial tax. A minimum stay of two consecutive nights is required. Offer is subject to availability, is not applicable to group bookings and cannot be combined with any other promotion.
