Swine Flu Update

We continue to work with the media and government officials to communicate the facts about the swine flu situation in a measured and responsible way. The Obama Administration continues to affirm an approach that balances concern without alarm, as are the health experts closest to the challenge.

The talking points provided yesterday continue to be appropriate to guide your comments to the media. Again, we encourage you to share them with your members.

USTravel.org now has an updated Swine Flu Resources page, which can be accessed at http://www.ustravel.org/pressmedia/swine_flu.html. In addition to the Oxford Economics assessment of the impact of the SARS scare on the Asian economy in the months following the outbreak that was provided yesterday, it also now contains an update of how other countries are responding to the situation (see attachment), as well as quotes from various health experts.

Latest Information

· World Health Organization continues to advise no restriction on travel related to the swine flu, and no closing of borders, but has raised the level of flu pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5. The move signals an increased urgency for governments to implement pandemic readiness procedures.

· The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. now stands at 91, including the death of a young child in Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Of the confirmed cases, a majority remain associated with one high school in New York.

What Officials Are Saying

· "The things we learned when we were little -- covering a cough, frequent hand-washing -- if people do these things it will decrease the spread."
-Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC; April 29

· “To put this in perspective, on average 36,000 people die each year of the seasonal flu.”
-Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC; April 29

· "The disease is not a food-borne illness."
-Rear Adm. Anne Schuchat, CDC's interim science and public health deputy director, told the Senate Homeland Security Committee, affirming the disease is not spread by eating pork; April 29, 2009

· “[The federal government] is prepared to do whatever is necessary to control the impact of this virus."
-President Barack Obama, noting he has requested $1.5 billion in emergency funding to ensure adequate supplies of vaccines; April 29, 2009

· "Border controls don't work. Screening doesn't work…It became extremely clear after SARS that the efficacy of border checks far underweighed the economic disruption…So there was much more economic disruption by these measures than there was public health benefit. In public health terms, it didn't work. So we don't want to repeat something that didn't work."
-Gregory Hartl, spokesman for the World Health Organization; April 28, 2008

No More Excuses at ZUJI As Aussies Rush To Give Themselves a Break

SYDNEY: Just two weeks into its innovative 'no more excuses' consumer marketing campaign (www.nomoreexcuses.com.au ) online travel agent ZUJI Australia (www.zuji.com.au ) has recorded impressive results including a dramatic increase in short break package bookings this month, as Aussie travellers take their leave and their stimulus packages and book online and en masse. ZUJI's 'no more excuses' campaign, launched earlier this month and increased savings available through ZUJI's new TripSaver technology  are helping to fuel this ongoing trend towards short breaks and back Kevin Rudd's incentive to increase consumer spending on domestic products and travel.

Peter Smith, General Manager, ZUJI Australia, commented, "Short breaks booked at short notice to domestic and Asian–international destinations have remained popular with Aussies who are continuing to travel, and book online, despite the economic downturn. In response to this ZUJI is  championing short breaks with a lighthearted look at the excuses we all make for NOT taking that short break we all need, a range of fantastic short break deals, both domestic and international, and new easy-to use booking tools on our website. The 'no more excuses' campaign is a natural extension of ZUJI's Helping Holidays Happen mantra, and has been wholeheartedly embraced by Aussie travellers."

Because ZUJI believe in 'Helping Holidays Happen' they will make one of their employees available 24/7 to fix your excuse for not taking a short break.  People can tell 'Dave' their excuse and he will fix it.  Most of the reasons people do not go on short breaks are pretty silly so his solutions can be fun, tongue in cheek and a bit silly too!

In the first 2 weeks of the campaign, the top 5 excuses submitted by Australian travellers for NOT taking that short break are:

1.      I have to work (**check out ZUJI's innovative and useful solution to this one involving a good set of speakers and a closed office door: you never know when you're going to need it!)

2.      I have to look after my dog

3.      My wife/girlfriend doesn't want to go

4.      My parrot gets lonely

5.      I have to look after the children (aged 0-4)

ZUJI's new online booking tool (DP) powered by their proprietary technology TripSaver, offers convenience and real savings when flights and hotels are booked together, without compromising travellers' options. And the top 5 short-break destinations booked on www.ZUJI.com.au ?

Sydney
Melbourne
Gold Coast
Cairns
Auckland

Peter Smith concludes, 'We are delighted at the early success of the campaign which is driving unprecedented increases in traffic to the ZUJI site, bookings and increases in average spend. We are confident these results will continue as the campaign resumes at the end of the month and deliver even more savings in flight+hotel packages to Australian travellers on ZUJI.com.au".

So what's your excuse? No really, we'd like to know!  **Go to www.nomoreexcuses.com.au (then book your short break at ZUJI.com.au).

The BearCam is installed in the animal observation site of the Wild Brown Bear Company, which arranges animal watching tours. In tests last summer, the webcam system which films live feeds showed a very high probability of capturing the bears on film. Although brown bears are classed as near threatened in for example many European countries, the taiga forests of Eastern Finland are home to a large number of them.

“Bears are shy, mostly nocturnal animals and are rarely seen without hidden observation huts and the use of carcasses. However, one can see bears approximately 95 per cent of the nights between late April and August,” explains Jaana Keränen, the sales manager of Wild Taiga, a network of the region’s tourism operators.

BearCam feeds live videos in the hours between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the time when bears are most active. Daytime visitors of the website can browse the video archive.

From April, the first to wake up from their winter’s sleep are the large males, followed later in June by the mother bears and their cubs. Obtaining good quality video material is easy during the period of the Midnight Sun when the sun doesn’t set. For darker nights in the autumn, the video camera is equipped with infrared light.

The evergreen taiga forest provides possibilities for guided wildlife observing and photographing trips. In these excursions, one can admire different rare and endangered wild mammals, in particular bears, wolves and wolverines.

Starting May 1st the BearCam can be found on the Wild Brown Bear website at www.wbb.fi

Information about operators offering wildlife observation tours can be found at Wild Taiga website www.wildtaiga.fi

"Visitors to the area say The Manning Valley, surrounding Taree on the Mid North Coast NSW, is attractive because of its natural beauty and its cultural heritage making it the perfect place to reconnect with family and friends" said Manning Valley Tourism Coordinator Kim MacDonald. "The Manning Valley offers a large variety of accommodation and attractions, convenient proximity to the Sydney, Newcastle, Hunter and New England areas without the hustle and bustle of other larger regions. This campaign is an excellent opportunity to showcase our region to a large number of potential visitors".

"Tourism operators have worked closely with Manning Valley Tourism to make visiting our region more affordable allowing visitors to discover the beauty of the region" said Ms MacDonald.

Running between 18th April and 30 June 2009, the objectives of this nature based campaign are to increase awareness and interest in the Manning Valley's natural assets, consequently increasing visitation, expenditure and length of stay in the Manning Valley. The campaign integrates television and print advertising, online marketing, trade partnerships and public relations activities in a number of destinations all within a tank of fuel from the Manning Valley.

Television advertisements will be aired on NBN Television in the Newcastle region, Prime Television in New England, and supported by a variety of print advertisements including The Newcastle Herald, Focus Magazine Armidale and The Northern Daily Leader in Tamworth. The campaign is also being promoted at both the Hunter Valley Caravan and Camping Expo in May and the NSW Caravan, Camping 4WD Supershow this week.

The campaign has been made possible due to the newly formed Tourism NSW Regional Partnership Program which has been developed to facilitate the expansion of regional tourism. Experience the Mystique of Sea Turtles in Celebration of World Ocean Day

Imagine a close-up and personal encounter with one of the world’s most mystical and prehistoric creatures. That is what engagement with sea turtles is all about. Communities around the world will celebrate World Ocean Day on June 8, and the occasion presents many opportunities to see these endangered gentle giants in person and participate in conservation efforts that are underway to protect them. SEE Turtles (www.seeturtles.org) is offering a free volunteer placement service that matches interested volunteers with sea turtle conservation projects in Mexico, Costa Rica, Tobago, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

Watching a green sea turtle gracefully meander through the water or witnessing a horde of leatherback sea turtle hatchlings scramble to the ocean may be one of the most joyful experiences in life. Sea turtles are among the earth’s most ancient and fascinating animals: they have been a mainstay in six of the world’s seven oceans for millions of years, can travel thousands of miles, and can live to be 80 years old. While they live most of their lives at sea, they come to shore for nesting rituals that date back to prehistoric times, creating unforgettable and intimate opportunities to interact with them.

All seven species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered, and three, the Leatherback, Kemp’s Ridley, and Hawksbill are listed as critically endangered. The Leatherback population in the Pacific Ocean was once the world’s largest, but has declined dramatically primarily due to human exploitation, commercial fisheries, and loss of nesting habitat.

The SEE Turtles volunteer program creates opportunities for interested parties to engage with sea turtles, and participate in turtle conservation efforts right alongside expert biologists and sea turtle researchers. Volunteering on a sea turtle conservation project generally involves tracking and tagging turtles, night patrols of the nesting beaches, and helping researchers collect data. Many projects also include shifts in the egg hatcheries where the eggs are protected from poachers and animals. In addition to meaningful project work, volunteers will have time to explore the rainforest, visit local towns, or simply enjoy a refreshing ocean swim and relaxation on the beach.

For more information and to apply, visit www.seeturtles.org and click on the link to the volunteer matching form. Applicants will be asked to submit their preferred destinations, dates of travel, budget requirements, desired accommodations, and other criteria. SEE Turtles will then match volunteers to partner organizations and projects that best fit their preferences. No prior experience working with sea turtles is necessary and volunteers do not need to be able to speak Spanish. Volunteers should be in reasonable physical condition and are asked to contribute at least a week of their time.

About SEE Turtles
Going beyond the ecotourism mantra of "leave only footprints", SEE Turtles (www.seeturtles.org) suggests that tourists should make a positive impact through conservation tourism. Conservation tourism supports communities protecting sea turtles by increasing the income needed for local conservation efforts, providing economic alternatives to end threats to sea turtles and inspiring travelers to take a more active role in protecting sea turtles. SEE Turtles is an Ocean Revolution conservation tourism project that links people with sea turtle sites in ways that directly support efforts to protect sea turtles, while increasing resources in communities to help residents thrive and value sea turtles in their environment. Ocean Revolution is a project of The Ocean Foundation.

George’s, a Perfect Culinary Experience!

George’s on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula offers a unique travel experience, combining luxury accommodation with onsite professional cooking courses.

Seated atop Arthur’s Seat with sweeping views overlooking magnificent Port Phillip Bay, George’s was created on the concept of the famous international live-in cooking schools of Italy & South of France. This stylish B&B offers quality accommodation and hands on cooking classes for Australia’s growing culinary market.

George’s is the brainchild of Peter Schofield, who noticed there were few ‘live in’ culinary retreats in Australia. Peter believed the concept would be attractive with the increasingly food-savvy Australian market, and by locating his facility in a major tourism region, there was also scope to maintain high occupancy rates between the themed food courses.

‘I believe it’s a unique product in Australia, and having done close to 20 cooking courses now proves the formula is working…..guests thoroughly enjoyed the cooking course with upmarket accommodation. We’ve found that private groups work best, as then they get to choose one of 8 cuisine themes - Classic French; Flavours of SE Asia; Are You Game; Patisserie; Fresh Ocean Produce; Health Conscious; Americas; Mediterranean Escape’ Peter said.

George's 2 and 3 day culinary courses with Executive Chef, Duncan White-Robertson are purposely limited to 8 participants to give each ‘foodie’ an equal opportunity to finetune their cooking skills and learn kitchen techniques from sharpening knifes through to hygeniene procedures and the use of fresh herbs in food dishes, etc.

Duncan White-Robertson is a star chef on the rise. Tagged by media as Australia’s answer to Jamie Oliver, George’s is thrilled to have him as Executive Chef. Feedback from class participants already confirms Duncan as the perfect instructor. His immense global cuisine experience over 20 years, extensive teaching in the field of culinary arts and training as an actor have all contributed to his persona.

George’s culinary courses include everything gastronomic. The 3 day cooking course comprises of: 2 nights lavish accommodation in a designer suite with private balcony; ‘hands on’ cooking lessons with Chef* * all meals & beverages ; cooking equipment; worksheets; recipes; pre-dinner wine tasting with Sommelier; 4 course degustation dinner with matching wines presented by Chef; 30 minute natural spa at Peninsula Hot Springs; local produce & winery tour; transfers to & from local activities; insurance cover; and a gift pack!

Priced at AUD$850 per person for a 2 day course or AUD$1,300pp for 3 days (maximum/minimum 8 participants). George’s next 3 day culinary course is 16th, 17th & 18th June 09.

When participants arrive, they welcomed with a kit comprising of the program, along with a complimentary bottle of Mornington Peninsula wine and other freebies. After ‘donning’ the aprons by the Chef, they are then escorted into a state-of-the art stainless steel commercial kitchen to commence the ‘cooking program’ under his supervision.

In essence, the food cooked on Day 1 morning creates a casual lunch, and the food cooked that afternoon forms a fine dining degustation dinner menu. Upon arrival, they are greeted by a Sommelier from Elgee Park Wines (local winery) for a wine tasting…..then seated for a more formal 5 course degustation dinner with matching wines, the food dishes presented by the Chef. The following day includes a cooked breakfast, followed by cooking classes to form another casual lunch. A host is also included in the program to meet’n’greet guests, offer tea/coffee, serve the food dishes and wines for each meal and virtually to spoil each individual!

‘I’m always so impressed with each retreat, especially when I serve the guest food dishes for the degustation dinner matched with matching wines…and to see the looks on their faces, at just how good it is. It’s wonderful being a cooking teacher, I love to fill people with joy’ Duncan said.

If you book a culinary course by the end of June 09, then participants receive AUD$150 gift voucher which can be redeemed at George’s towards accommodation or a cooking course. Live the cuisine dream!

Less than an hour from Melbourne, George’s is just minutes away from Mornington Peninsula’s premier attractions. Leading wineries are literally around the corner, and golf courses, markets, Safety Beach Marina and the Peninsula Hot Springs are only a stone’s throw away.

INTRODUCING… MR & MRS SMITH

Mr & Mrs Smith

Definition:
Proper Noun

1. The world's leading boutique accommodation experts.
2. A common pseudonym often used by couples checking into a hotel for a romantic (and sometimes clandestine) weekend away.

No, not Brad and Angelina.

We're talking about Mr & Mrs Smith, the world's leading boutique hotel experts, who'll be bringing their irresistible cocktail of style-spotting and service to would-be-Mr & Mrs Smiths across Australia, New Zealand and Asia from April 2009.

Part travel-guide, part holiday-booking-service, part travel-club for those in the know, Mr & Mrs Smith is all about making sure every weekend (or week) away is an unforgettable experience.

The website, www.mrandmrssmith.com, offers the discerning traveller more than 500 recommendations for smaller, sexier hotels and properties from Australia and around the world that stuffy luxury guides and run-of-the-mill directory sites so often overlook.

Every boutique hotel in the Mr & Mrs Smith collection has been hand-picked by the Mr & Mrs Smith team and anonymously reviewed by a handful of "tastemakers" from the worlds of music, fashion, theatre, publishing, architecture, food and wine who's brief is to provide you with the low-down on each property's perks and quirks, Including Insider tips on the best rooms in the house.

Designer Stella McCartney, chef Raymond Blanc and burlesque artist Dita Von Teese are among Mr & Mrs Smith's existing reviewers, and they'll be joined by local tastemakers such as actress Sigrid Thornton, TV personality Chris Brown, celebrity restaurateur Christine Manfield and others soon to be revealed when Mr & Mrs Smith opens for business on this side of the world later in 2009.

The Mr & Mrs Smith concept was born in the UK in 2003 when founders James Lohan and Tamara Heber-Percy had the unfortunate experience of staying in a bad hotel. Determined that no-one should ever have to share their bad luck they launched the first Mr & Mrs Smith Guide, a beautiful book of boutique properties guaranteed to provide their guests with a memorable stay, this time for all the right reasons.

The Smiths went online in 2005 and www.mrandmrssmith.com is now one of the most trafficked boutique hotel sites in Europe, with more than 250,000 visitors each month. Sassy destination profiles supplement hotel information with insider tips on places to eat (including the best tables), drink, dance, shop and get active nearby.

The Asia-Pacific arm of Mr & Mrs Smith (which includes Australia and New Zealand) is being established in partnership with Simon Westcott, former

Global Publisher of Lonely Planet, regular travel writer and blogger and a boutique hotel connoisseur in his own right.

Simon and his crack local team are working hard to expand Mr & Mrs Smith's Asia-Pacific collection online to include an unrivalled selection of up to 200 boutique hotels in Australia and abroad by the end of the year.

A brand new Mr & Mrs Smith Australia and New Zealand book is also planned to hit the shelves in October 2009, with a Mr & Mrs Smith Asia planned to follow in March 2010.

But Mr & Mrs Smith is about more than just hot tips for great weekends away.  Mr & Mrs Smith offers a premium travel booking service and can arrange everything for the boutique traveller either online, or through our local travel team who can be contacted anytime via a  free local call.

Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi www.desertislands.anantara.com)

Anantara Desert Islands Resort and Spa lies on the exclusive Sir Bani Yas Island, just 150 miles southwest of Abu Dhabi. Originally the private island retreat and Royal nature reserve of Sheikh Zayed, the late ruler and founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sir Bani Yas is one of eight natural islands which collectively form the Desert Islands and is the first one open to the public.

Spanning over 87 square kilometres, Sir Bani Yas is one of the largest nature reserves in Arabia and thanks to over two decades of intensive conservation work and ecological investment, is now home to over 2.5 million trees and plants. The island’s game park houses thousands of free-roaming animals including hyena, giraffe, cheetah and Arabian Oryx, which are sadly now extinct in the wild, whilst the bird sanctuary boasts everything from ostriches and emus to pink flamingos. The waters surrounding the island are equally rich and are frequented by dolphins and sea turtles.

The five-star Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa is the perfect hideaway for those seeking adventure and nature based experiences combined with sheer luxury and pampering. The resort’s 64 luxuriously designed bedrooms suites with living quarters are decked out with state-of-the-art amenities and are enriched by greenery and Arabian touches including marble bath fixtures.

For those wishing to venture out to explore the natural wonders of Sir Ban Yas Island, a number of activities such as adventure safaris, bird watching, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, diving and snorkelling are available from the resort.
