Thailand’s Annual Songkran Festival - Soak up the fun!

Travellers Can Soak up the Fun at Thailand’s Annual Songkran Festival, Tourism Authority of Thailand to organise celebrations in Bangkok and twelve provinces

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is organising a variety of events from 6 to 21 April 2013 to celebrate the Thai New Year under the name “Songkran Splendours.” The holiday, which falls during the hottest month of the year in Thailand, celebrates the conventional calendar’s “astrological passage” and is marked by throwing water on anyone within splashing range.

TAT considers Songkran a unique festival which has captured the attention of many Thai and foreign travellers alike, and as a result it is holding simultaneous events in different areas of the country. The festival has been actively promoted at overseas marketing showswith the ultimate goal to introduce it as a world event.

“Songkran is definitely the festival that Thais most look forward to because it brings together family and friends to celebrate the Thai New Year by honouring their elders, while engaging in day-long fun by splashing water on friends and passersby. It is a unique combination of honouring ancient traditions and having fun, which makes Songkran popular with visitors looking for an unforgettable Thai experience.” said Mr. Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of the Tourism Authority.

This year features a wealth of Songkran-related activities throughout the country. Peoplecan participate in an assortment of activities ranging from beauty pageants and oyster shelling competitions, to sprinkling water on sacred Buddha statues and making food offerings at temples.

The grand opening of the festival takes place in Bangkok and will feature events at four popular temples in the city, plus the area around Siam Paragon, and also a designated stretch along the Chao Phraya River.

“In 2013, we’ve ensured that visitors to Thailand can partake in an array of events happening throughout the country so they can explore and experience how people from various regions of the country celebrate the Songkran Festival," added Mr. Suraphon.

This year’s “Songkran Splendours” include:

Bangkok- (12-16 April)

Old City Songkran Festival, Ayutthaya - (13-16 April )

Suphan Buri Songkran Festival - (11-14 April )

Chon Buri Songkran Festival - (13-21 April, depending on location )

Phra Padaeng Songkran Festival, Samut Prakan Province - (19-21 April )

Chiang Mai Songkran Festival - (7 -16 April , depending on location)

Sukhothai Songkran Festival - (6-14 April , depending on location)

Thai - Lao New Year’s Merit Ceremony & Nakhon Phanom Songkran Festival - (8-15 April)

Top Isan Songkran, Dok Khun Festival - (8-15 April)

Isan Nong Khai Songkran Festival - (6-17 April)

Hat Yai Midnight Songkran - (11-14 April)

Songkran on Phuket Beach - (10-15 April)

Nakhon Sri Thammarat’s Nang Dan Procession in Songkran - (11-15 April)

While the official holiday runs from 12-16 April, events will be ongoing for various periods from 11 to 21 April. TAT is expecting to make a big splash with this year’s festival, hoping it will lead to tourists returning for future Songkran holidays. In addition to increased revenue, TAT hopes successful marketing of Songkran will lead to conservation and restoration of the traditions, activities, festivals, cultures, and resources that Thailand has to offer tourists, helping to maintain Thailand’s uniqueness and its heritage.

Pentecost Island Land Diving: Tribal Daredevils in Vanuatu

If you thought bungy jumping was extreme, then perhaps you haven't heard of Nagol, which means 'land diving'. It involves local men and boys on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu who jump from a manmade tower with a vine secured around their legs, aiming to touch the ground with their shoulders. An annual ritual, you need to see to believe, Aussies can witness this jaw dropping event between April and June each year on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Nagol goes back nearly 15 centuries, long before the world's first commercial bungy operation opened in 1988. Each April, when the first yam crop is ready for harvest, the people on Pentecost Island begin building towers from branches, vines and tree trunks. It takes five weeks to construct a suitable 20-30 metre tower.

Local men carefully select a vine, knowing that a few centimetres can make all the difference, tie the vine to their legs and dive headfirst from the tower platform at 72km per hour. The aim is to land close enough with their head curled under so that just their shoulders touch the ground. It is believed that this feat will make the ground fertile for the following year.

Land diving is reserved for the locals but travelling to Pentecost Island to witness this awe-inspiring ceremony is an incredible experience. Prepare to be swept up in the excitement as the entire village gathers together in song and dance to watch these tribal daredevils tempt fate.

Pentecost Island, which also boasts pristine beaches, reefs, untouched forests, mountains and jungles as well as exotic wildlife, is within easy reach for Aussie travellers.

Tradition Meets Indulgence at Hard Rock Hotel Penang

In conjunction with the opening of its two new luxurious private outdoor spa villas, Hard Rock Hotel Penang has launched its brand new spa menu featuring a range of traditional techniques that guarantee to deliver deeper relaxation to modern day spa seekers.

General Manager John Primmer says the expansion of the spa and the extension of the spa menu were designed to meet the high demands for more space and variety of treatments from the hotel guests and day visitors.

"Apart from keeping our menus fresh and interesting for our guests, especially the regular ones, the new outdoor villas cater specifically to couples and those who enjoy post-treatment indulgences such as outdoor showers and flower baths," says Primmer. "The villas have been an absolute hit with parents and young couples."

Four notable new treatments for adults include:
  • - Rhythm Sticks – a 90 minute treatment which involves the use of bamboo sticks of various sizes and heated oil;
  • - Retune Yourself – a 90 minute treatment which involves an unlikely combination of the traditional Hawaiian massage technique of long rhythmic strokes and the Tibetan Singing Bowl (Suzu Gong);
  • - Buff Bar, the first of its kind 120 minute treatment on Penang island which involves a personalised body scrub and a traditional Malaysian or Hard Rock massage; and
  • - Pevonia Green Coffee Slimming, a 60 minute hi-tech cellulite treatment by Pevonia.
The Sweet Shop

Kids (6-12 years old) on the other hand, can relax with The Sweet Shop, a new pampering package which includes a facial, manicure and pedicure.

"Just like guitars that need retuning every now and then, the human mind, body and spirit also require retuning from time to time as well," says Primmer.

"Since the launch, we have received much positive feedback from our guests, including men and children, on the new menu and villas. We hope to continue meeting and exceeding their expectations."

To help guests retune and refresh for 2013, Hard Rock Hotel Penang is offering two special packages - the Twin Therapy Package which combines the Rhythm Sticks Massage and Buff Bar body treatment for approximately AUD100 plus taxes; and the Spa Duet Package which combines Retune Yourself and Muscle Ease Bath Soak) for approximately AUD88 plus taxes. The offer is only valid until the end of February 2013. For more information, visit http://penang.hardrockhotels.net.

See Much More of Italy for Much Less with Rail Europe

Inline images 1

Rail Europe has announced that effective immediately, consumers will have with access to the complete range of fares across Trenitalia's lines, including Trenitalia's lead in fares, which offer discounts of up to 70% off the normal fares.

Manager Australasia of Rail Europe, Richard Leonard, says this is an important and long-awaited move especially for this market because Trenitalia services are some of the more popular lines used by Aussie travellers.

"It's no secret that Aussies love visiting and revisiting Italy each year," says Leonard.  "In 2012, more than 45,000 Australians travelled around Italy by train, a 12% increase from 2010, making it the third most popular European country for Aussie rail travellers.

"With Trenitalia gradually increasing its frequency of services over the years and even re-routing some routes to allow for high-speed services between selected cities, travellers have responded positively to the greater flexibility in travel times this has given rise to.

"On average, Italian rail ticket sales in Australia increase by about 10% each year and with increased air capacity to Europe this year, we are confident sales will only strengthen. Also in a few weeks, consumers will also have access to the Premium or Second class seats from raileurope.com.au."

More than 180 trains per day with 574 seats per train link all major Italian cities. While the Frecciabianca runs the classic routes, the state of the art Frecciarossa and Frecciargento connect passengers between Milan and Salerno, and between Rome, the North East and South of Italy. The high frequency of services allows travellers the flexibility to travel at a time that best suits them.

Along with the comforts across all classes including the luxury of space, meals and wide seats (including leather in Business Class), wi-fi is also available to all travellers for only one cent. The Executive Class, popular among business travellers and luxury seekers, also features an open bar, meal services, a meeting room and a club lounge.

Point to point fares start from $66 between Milan and Rome (previously $106), $41 for travel between Rome and Florence (previously $64), $68 between Rome and Venice (previously $99) and from $27 for travel between cities in the North of Italy (previously $46). The Italian Rail Pass starts at $200 per person. See www.raileurope.com.au for more fares.

Bookings for Trenitalia services can be made up to three months in advance and seat reservations are required before departure.
