Free '101 Tips for Women Travelers'

Booklet by Harriet Lewis Now Available

Boston, MA: Traveling solo and feeling a bit self-conscious about eating alone? Grab a stool at the bar – and order your meal there. The bartender will usually try to make you feel at home, strike up a conversation, and often engage others at the counter to join in. This tip, #59, is just one of 101 helpful travel tips in a free new booklet, “101 Tips for Women Travelers,” by Harriet Lewis, global traveler and vice chair of Grand Circle Corporation, which provides international vacations to Americans over 50 through its brands Overseas Adventure Travel, Grand Circle Cruise Line, and Grand Circle Travel.

101 Tips for Women is chock-full of unique and practical tips to make travel easy, enriching, and fun. It’s another resource designed to offer the industry’s best service and value to female travelers, including those traveling solo. Last year, 70,000 of Grand Circle’s 110,000 travelers were women, with 27,000 of them traveling as solos. “By the time women turn 60, most of us have raised children, juggled family and career, and worked hard to keep everyone—spouse, kids, and boss happy. Now, it’s our time, and many of us are choosing to travel. We’re on a quest to learn, engage, and have fun.”

Harriet knows what she’s talking about – she has traveled to more than 100 countries in her lifetime to date, and many more are on her bucket list, yet to visit. “Women travel differently than men do, and this book, compiled with tips from our female travelers, staff, and guides, offers both the novice and seasoned female traveler innovative ways to get the ease of travel, cultural interaction, and insider’s perspective they seek when they head overseas.”

"101 Tips for Women Travelers" is a 126-page, 5"x7" booklet designed to fit in a woman's purse. Tips featured include ideas on trip preparation, packing, money transportation, health, beauty, security and safety, traveling solo, etiquette and more. There's a handy reference section with a foreign phrase guide, international size chart, time zones, packing essentials and more. Chapter headings inspire with ancedotes about some of history's most remarkable women travelers, such as the Queen of Sheba, Cleopatra and Amelia Earhart in addition to less well-known but equally fascinating travelers throughout history.

Almost 19 metres of snow at Niseko

Whilst this northern part of Japan is renowned for quality snow the amount (and how early it came) has surpassed the expectations of most snow enthusiasts.

Winter on Hokkaido stretches into April so there is still enough weeks in this season to enjoy what will be remembered as one of the snowiest seasons ever.

SkiJapan.com has several value-for-money March packages at its two-bedroom Powder Cottage in the heart of Hirafu Village, a lively ski town with an interesting blend of Asian and Western shops, bars and restaurants.

One that is within the budget of most families is a package from $775 per adult (2 adults) and $435 per child (2 children 12 yrs and under). Included is

seven nights accommodation in a self-cater, two-bedroom cottage, return airport transfers, six day all mountain lift pass and complimentary six days' ski equipment hire for kids 12 and under.

With in excess of 18 metres of snow to date on the higher slopes at Niseko there is more than enough to satisfy Australian skiers and boarders. A day trip to Rusutsu whilst at Niseko is highly recommended.

Come On Up to Alaska, the Snow is Amazing!

Alaska's unusually snowy winter - attributable to a strong La Nina cycle that has spurned many North American ski resorts this winter - has been making the news. The silver lining? All that snow means winter recreation opportunities of historic proportions.

At Alyeska Resort, 40 miles south of Anchorage, 462 inches has fallen since October 1, 2011, and the seasonal average snowfall (November to February) is 134 percent above average.

Throughout the Southcentral region, communities are on track to record the heaviest snowfall in years - perhaps ever.

The Prince William Sound communities of Valdez and Cordova have received 327.5 and 209.1 inches respectively this season.

With its snowiest months still ahead, Valdez is on track to surmount the 1988-89 record of 561 inches (almost 47 feet). As of January 27, Anchorage had received 91 inches of snow, which is already above the 74.5-inch average total snowfall for the season.

That's good news for outdoor recreation of all kinds, from snowmobiling to snowshoeing and skiing. The snowiest winter on record for Anchorage was in 1954-55, when 132.8 inches were tallied for the season. To plan your Alaska winter adventure, visit www.travelalaska.com.

Bond with your brood on a 'Famcation' this Easter

Getting the kids off the couch and heading on a family holiday can seem daunting in an age where iPhones and x-boxes reign but psychologists and industry experts claim the benefits of bonding with your brood are worth the effort.

According to John Feenaghty, general manager of cheap hotel accommodation website Quickbeds.com, finding a way to cater for the different interests and preferences of the typical Aussie family is a major stumbling block for many parents.

"Many parents find it time consuming trying to organise activities that everyone will enjoy, but taking the whole family on holiday can be an unforgettable experience that creates lifelong memories," Feenaghty said.

"This is why we have launched the Quickbeds.com 'Famcation' breaks just in time for the Easter holidays.

"These holiday package deals are in response to the increased demand for tailor made family holidays that will keep kids of all different ages and - just as importantly - parents entertained."

According to child psychologist, Sally Lock, family holidays are a great way of ensuring priceless quality time together.

"Active time together is essential for family cohesion, and importantly, getting children off the computer, away from the TV and participating in real life social activities that build their self-esteem and self- competence,"  Lock said.

Lock and Feenaghty agree that theme parks are great fun for the whole family, and Feenaghty recommends beach resorts with a dedicated youngster's club as ideal for children to make new friends within a safe environment.

Alternatively, he suggests a city break exploring museums, art galleries, zoos and parks, for a cultural and educational experience that both children and parents will enjoy.

"All the Famcation packages have been designed so that parents can keep their children entertained, whilst showing them new destinations, sights and activities. Famcations are the ideal time to appreciate time spent together away from modern day distractions," Feenaghty said.

The Famcation deals are all available to book online at Quickbeds.com: http://www.quickbeds.com/cheap-hotels/famcations.aspx

Tender-Footed, Gentle Beasts Welcomed Porters and Companions On Lares Valley Llama Trek, New Adventure in Peru

Andean trekking specialist Llama Expeditions (www.llamaexpeditions.com) announces a new 11-day custom itinerary, Lares Llama Trek. Guests explore the Peruvian Andes with tender-footed llamas as load-bearing companions throughout the journey.

Diane Valenti, owner/founder of Llama Expeditions, noted that horses which can carry heavier loads are used more often today than are llamas in Peruvian adventure travel. She said the reasons for this vary from the greater efficiency of horses to a growing humane concern for the llamas that can't handle extremely high elevations and rapid altitude changes.

Llama Expeditions hopes to reestablish the llama as a viable Peruvian pack animal. "The paths we follow meet stringent criteria as regards the wellbeing of our animal companions," Valenti said. "Plus, over the course of a trek our guests become very attached to them. Experiencing these gentle friends day after day in their own natural setting enhances the delights of the trips and gives an economic boost to the families that own them."

The Lares Llama Trek trip (http://www.llamaexpeditions.com/exploration/lares-llama-trek/overview) begins and ends in Lima. It includes a tour of World Heritage sites as well as a culinary demonstration. In Cusco the Inca culture come to life through visits to nearby ruins and while exploring the Pisac market and salt pans of Maras. The actual hike begins at Lares hot springs when llamas join the guests. After the trek, guests visit Pumamarca and tour Inca homes in Ollantaytambo before embarking on the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo. Experiencing Machu Picchu concludes the adventure before guests return to Lima.

Departures are offered on an open scheduled basis with a minimum of two trekkers. The best travel times are between March and November. Per person rates are reduced as a group size increases and begin at $3,725 per person for two to four people. Included are double occupancy accommodations, airport/hotel transfers, English-speaking guides, entrance fees to sites, most meals, itinerary-dependent transportation, and carbon offsetting for flights.

Llama Expeditions offers a range of guided tours through Peru, from sightseeing to multi-day hikes along the Inca Trail. In addition to taking in the stunning scenery and experiencing true adventure, these tours also allow travelers to make a personal connection to the country and its people.

"The company fills the spot between responsible tourism and voluntourism," said Valenti. "This is a real vacation for people who work hard and want a chance to relax. We stay in nice hotels and eat in good restaurants. But it's also a chance for culturally curious travelers to make a meaningful connection with the people and the land of Peru." Guests are encouraged to "pay-it-forward" by contributing to a variety of local community development organizations. See: http://www.llamaexpeditions.com/inspiration

About Llama Expeditions

Entrepreneur and outdoorswoman Diane Valenti hatched the idea for her company in 2008 over a home-cooked chicken dinner at close to 14,000 feet in the Peruvian Andes. She has been able to apply her over 20 years as a business consultant working with clients such as Genentech, Nike, and Starbucks Coffee Company to her enterprise that goes beyond just ordinary tourism.

Llama Expeditions tours offer full cultural immersion giving guests the opportunity to see how Peruvians really live—to talk with them about their dreams and accomplishments and to learn about the challenges they face. Interactions with carefully selected nonprofit and grassroots organizations are also woven into the itinerary when possible giving participants the chance to experience the difference gifts of healthy food, school supplies, clothing, or sunglasses can make in the lives of some of the world's poorest people.

Looking to the future Llama Expeditions anticipates investigating new and rewarding llama trekking options and local community relationships in other locations of the Peruvian Andes and beyond.

Llama Expeditions is a member of the Adventure Travel Trade Association and the International Ecotourism Society.

Surf City Sydney Film Festival

Come on a surf safari in celluloid and discover epic film journeys – from Puberty Blues to Bra boys. Join surfers, filmmakers and cultural commentators to explore the making of these classics.

Gidget (1959) and Blue Hawaii (1961)
11 February | Nell Schofield; actor, TV presenter and producer | Jaimie and Aspasia Leonarder; Mu Meson film archive |

Gidget is one of the quintessential and original surf movies. It follows the story of Francis who has a run in with some surfers while swimming one day and becomes drawn to the sport, as well as the surfers. Blue Hawaii, an Elvis classic, is the first of three movies that he shot in Hawaii. It is a fun musical that follows Chad Gates as he returns to the surfing culture of Hawaii after serving in the army.

Puberty Blues (1971)
18 February | Paul Byrnes; Sydney Morning Herald film critic and senior curator for Australian Screen Online | Paul Clarke; director and producer of Bombora | Rebecca Olive; academic and surfing blogger |

Puberty Blues is a cult-classic that follows the lives of a group of Aussie teenage girls as they grow up on the beach and hanging out with the local surfer boys.

Heaven (1997), Hell (2009) and Bra Boys (2007)
25 February | Nell Schofield; actor, TV presenter and producer | Macario De Souza; director of Bra Boys |

These surf flicks are experimental and controversial. Hear Nell Schofield talk about her movie Hell which was created in response to Tracey Moffatt's art film Heaven, which compiles footage of male surfers posing, surfing, dressing and undressing on Australian beaches. Bra Boys tells the story of the notorious Maroubra surf-gang. The film looks at their success as big wave surfers as well as other aspects of their sometimes turbulent lives within surfing culture and Sydney society.
