Michael Palin returns to Australia

Lateral Events is delighted that Michael Palin, iconic comedian, actor, writer and television travel presenter, has agreed to tour Australia in December with a new live show. Tickets will be on sale from 29 June at ticketek.com.au.

Monty Python, the Beatles of comedy, epitomized the innate ability to take good ideas and compress them into diamonds.

Think about Monty Python and a myriad of conflicting sketches crash into your mind: The Dead Parrot, Nudge Nudge, Argument Clinic, Hell’s Grannies, The Lumberjack Song, The Killer Joke. Then come the quotes: ‘Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!’, ‘What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, ‘It’s just a scratch, I’ve had worse’, ‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’, ‘He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy’ and so on.

Add Ripping Yarns, A Fish Called Wanda and travel; Around the World in 80 Days, Himalaya, Pole to Pole and Brazil.

Michael Palin will re-live his legendary comedic repertoire before delving into his latest project, a change of pace and focus; documenting the maritime adventures of HMS Erebus.

Erebus was part of a successful 19th-century British expedition to the Antarctic which set out from Hobart, but later met her doom in search of a Northwest Passage across what is now Canada's Arctic. Franklin's disastrous 1845 expedition saw the sinking of both the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror after they became trapped by ice. The entire expedition, comprising 129 men including Franklin, was lost.

Michael Palin will describe what life was like for the officers and crew who froze and starved to death in the Arctic wastes, driven to cannibalism and poisoned by the food that they hoped would sustain them.

“The story of the life and death of HMS Erebus appeals to me on many levels. It combines my love of the sea and ships, my fascination with those who went where no-one had been before, and my conviction that history is made by accident rather than intention,” said Palin.

Banyan Tree Bintan Winter offer

Save 30% on a luxury getaway to the Indonesian island of Bintan with Banyan Tree Bintan

Indulge in a three-night stay from SGD367 plus tax night per night

Between now and 31 March 2019, Banyan Tree Bintan is offering guests booking to stay for three nights or more a 30% discount off the best available rate. Guests can therefore enjoy a three-night stay for as little as SGD367 plus tax per night.

Banyan Tree Bintan is a hidden gem located on the northwest tip of Bintan island in Indonesia – only 45 minutes by ferry from Singapore and on a secluded bay overlooking the South China Sea. Inspired by the traditional fishing villages on Bintan island, villas are built on stilts to preserve the towering 100-year-old trees lining the hillside. As a result, villas soar above the ground, giving a delightful tree-top experience in the heart of nature. All private villas feature a king-sized four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom and sunken bath as well as a private sundeck and an outdoor relaxation pool overlooking the sea.

Located next door to Banyan Tree Bintan, Angsana Bintan is the young, fun sister to Banyan Tree. For adventure lovers, there is a large selection of land and watersports activities available, including quad bikes, all-terrain vehicles, golf and many more.

Banyan Tree's properties across the world have an impressive range of programs that support conservation, biodiversity, education and social enterprise for local communities. The on-site Conservation Lab at Banyan Tree Bintan nurtures eggs and hatchlings and releases baby hawksbill and green sea turtles (both species are endangered) when they're about four months old. Thanks to education programs, local fisherman now report new nests of eggs, which are brought into the lab's hatchery away from predators.

This offer includes daily breakfast at Treetops restaurant; return transfer by private car between Bintan ferry terminal and Banyan Tree Bintan, 20% off dining at restaurants within Laguna Bintan and 20% off body massages at Banyan Tree Spa Bintan.
