Cruise the Nile in Style

#rivercruising

Refurbished Sun Boat IV unveiled.

A wish list destination for centuries, there never has there been a better time to travel Egypt. An extended period of stability has seen a real resurgence of interest in a country which is buzzing with renewed optimism and visitors are starting to flood back.

But if you need any more persuading, then a Nile cruise aboard the recently unveiled  Sun Boat IV, back on the river after an extensive refurbishment, is guaranteed to tempt. Following the mighty Nile from Aswan to Luxor through the heart of Egypt, the stunningly transformed Sun Boat IV brings new levels of elegance to the Nile with its contemporary-yet-classic design.

With just forty rooms, including two presidential suites and two royal suites, time on the boat is spent in unrivalled luxury. In each cabin, elegance has been elevated with rich teak flooring, Egyptian marble, hand-painted decorative details and other distinctive touches including neutral-toned textiles complementing soft fabrics draped artfully over sumptuous oversized beds. Here, and elsewhere throughout the ship, shades of sandstone echo the colour scheme of the surrounding desert and temples, blending traditional references with a modern sense of style, to create a serene and tranquil environment a world away from traditional river-cruise cabins.

Of course, each cruise is as cultured as it is calming. On board, guests can indulge in exquisite meals prepared by gourmet chefs and discover the secrets to regional specialities such as Kushari, a spicy mix of black lentil, rice, chickpeas with tomato and fried onion, and Mahshi – delicious stuffed vegetables; enjoy a Nubian dance night and a chance to dress up in colourful traditional Egyptian galabeyas; or soak up the sun by the ship's spectacular river-view pool – the perfect place to watch Egypt's ancient sites pass by.

Indeed, gliding down the world's longest waterway, the county's past remains vibrant and alive in its many majestic monuments and relics, threaded along the river banks. Cruises take in some of the best-known highlights including the Valley of the Kings and Queens, the Temple of Karnak the Unfinished Obelisk, Philae and Luxor, as well the more remote, but equally spectacular Denderah, Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples, with expert Egyptologists on hand to bring history to life on all shore excursions.

Guests will be taken on an immersive 6-day/5-night journey into Tuscany, celebrating the region's cultural pleasures and hilltop treasures in depth, up close and authentically rich in every way, and including a keynote address from author Frances Mayes, whose best-selling book, 'Under the Tuscan Sun' later became a box office success in the movie of the same name.

This beautiful property will host a cooking class for guests and conduct insider lectures on the history of Tuscan City States. Intrepid launches new range of South America experience

Intrepid's New South America Program Offers Adventurous Alternatives to the World's Most Saturated Tourist Experiences

Travellers now have an alternative to trek the 'other Inca Trail', try an alternative pilgrimage to the Camino or swap Everest for the Southern Hemisphere's highest mountain, with Intrepid Travel's new range of South America experiences that follow a less-trodden path without overtourism.

Tourists equate to 14 per cent of the population in Peru, and Intrepid wants to disperse the tourist dollar into more communities while taking travellers even further off-the-beaten-path.

"Intrepid recorded growth of 68% to South America this year from Australian travellers and according to our Adventure Travel Index the number one thing that Australians want on an adventure is to go to places less visited by mainstream tourists. We'll be putting the adventure in adventure travel as we take our very first groups to the Glacier of Tears, the summit of Mt Bonete and the Choquequirao Inca site in 2019," Intrepid Travel South America product manager Martin Ruffo said.

"While Mt Everest and Machu Picchu are always going to be high on the traditional bucket list, there are alternatives which are less trodden, just as beautiful and sometimes even more special," Ruffo added.

These 'not hot' spots are featured in the travel company's 2019 South America trips, on sale now:

  • Switch the Lost City: Offering a less-trodden and less touristy alternative to the Inca Trail, Intrepid is offering a trek to Peru's other Lost City, Choquequirao, which is believed to be up to three times larger than Machu Picchu and home to some of the best preserved Inca ruins. The road to Choquequirao takes travellers deep into the wilds of the Peruvian Andes, along steep trails that zig-zag through dense cloud forest, dusty desert and scenic passes with views of dramatic landscapes and snow-capped peaks. With only a handful of people making the journey each day, visitors often have the place to themselves. Because a trip to Peru wouldn't be complete without Machu Picchu, this trip also includes a guided tour of the famous Inca city and time to explore historic Cusco. The 13-day tour includes eight days of hiking and is priced from $2470*.
  • Switch Base Camp: Instead of Everest Base Camp, Intrepid is offering a hike to the base camp of Aconcagua, the Southern Hemisphere's highest mountain. Walking through glacial valleys and over rugged Andean peaks on a seven-day trek that reaches the 5000m-high summit of Mt Bonete, this Argentinian experience has everything that Everest does, plus the added bonus of starting and finishing in the Mendoza wine region offering ample opportunity to sample malbec. The 10-day tour is priced from $3412*.
  • Switch the Pilgrimage: The Valley of Tears mightn't be as well-known as the Camino trail but it has one hell of a story. Intrepid is offering a four-day trek through the rugged Andes to the site of one of the most famous plane crashes in history. The story of the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 and the lengths survivors went to survive, including cannibalism, was told in the '90s movie 'Alive'. The eight-day tour is priced from $2735*.

Michael Palin returns to Australia

Lateral Events is delighted that Michael Palin, iconic comedian, actor, writer and television travel presenter, has agreed to tour Australia in December with a new live show. Tickets will be on sale from 29 June at ticketek.com.au.

Monty Python, the Beatles of comedy, epitomized the innate ability to take good ideas and compress them into diamonds.

Think about Monty Python and a myriad of conflicting sketches crash into your mind: The Dead Parrot, Nudge Nudge, Argument Clinic, Hell’s Grannies, The Lumberjack Song, The Killer Joke. Then come the quotes: ‘Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!’, ‘What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, ‘It’s just a scratch, I’ve had worse’, ‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’, ‘He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy’ and so on.

Add Ripping Yarns, A Fish Called Wanda and travel; Around the World in 80 Days, Himalaya, Pole to Pole and Brazil.

Michael Palin will re-live his legendary comedic repertoire before delving into his latest project, a change of pace and focus; documenting the maritime adventures of HMS Erebus.

Erebus was part of a successful 19th-century British expedition to the Antarctic which set out from Hobart, but later met her doom in search of a Northwest Passage across what is now Canada's Arctic. Franklin's disastrous 1845 expedition saw the sinking of both the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror after they became trapped by ice. The entire expedition, comprising 129 men including Franklin, was lost.

Michael Palin will describe what life was like for the officers and crew who froze and starved to death in the Arctic wastes, driven to cannibalism and poisoned by the food that they hoped would sustain them.

“The story of the life and death of HMS Erebus appeals to me on many levels. It combines my love of the sea and ships, my fascination with those who went where no-one had been before, and my conviction that history is made by accident rather than intention,” said Palin.

Banyan Tree Bintan Winter offer

Save 30% on a luxury getaway to the Indonesian island of Bintan with Banyan Tree Bintan

Indulge in a three-night stay from SGD367 plus tax night per night

Between now and 31 March 2019, Banyan Tree Bintan is offering guests booking to stay for three nights or more a 30% discount off the best available rate. Guests can therefore enjoy a three-night stay for as little as SGD367 plus tax per night.

Banyan Tree Bintan is a hidden gem located on the northwest tip of Bintan island in Indonesia – only 45 minutes by ferry from Singapore and on a secluded bay overlooking the South China Sea. Inspired by the traditional fishing villages on Bintan island, villas are built on stilts to preserve the towering 100-year-old trees lining the hillside. As a result, villas soar above the ground, giving a delightful tree-top experience in the heart of nature. All private villas feature a king-sized four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom and sunken bath as well as a private sundeck and an outdoor relaxation pool overlooking the sea.

Located next door to Banyan Tree Bintan, Angsana Bintan is the young, fun sister to Banyan Tree. For adventure lovers, there is a large selection of land and watersports activities available, including quad bikes, all-terrain vehicles, golf and many more.

Banyan Tree's properties across the world have an impressive range of programs that support conservation, biodiversity, education and social enterprise for local communities. The on-site Conservation Lab at Banyan Tree Bintan nurtures eggs and hatchlings and releases baby hawksbill and green sea turtles (both species are endangered) when they're about four months old. Thanks to education programs, local fisherman now report new nests of eggs, which are brought into the lab's hatchery away from predators.

This offer includes daily breakfast at Treetops restaurant; return transfer by private car between Bintan ferry terminal and Banyan Tree Bintan, 20% off dining at restaurants within Laguna Bintan and 20% off body massages at Banyan Tree Spa Bintan.

It's Pie Time you visited NSW Southern Highlands

David Ellis

PIE EATERS unite – June's around the corner and that means it's time again for Australia's biggest celebration of everything pies in NSW's Southern Highlands… that becomes the Southern Pie-lands for all of June.

Based on the towns of Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale and the many picturesque little mountain villages around them, the Southern Highlands have more pie bakeries and pie outlets per capita than any other region in Australia and is arguably the unofficial Pie Capital of the country.

Last year's inaugural Southern Highlands' Pie Time drew thousands of pie-lovers to the Highlands through the month of June who, with enthusiastic locals, chomped their way through just over 100,000 pies – and which helped win Pie Time a major award in the 2017 Qantas Tourism Awards for best Destination Marketing Campaigns.

And last year's Southern Highlands Best Pie Competition has been expanded this year to become the NSW and ACT Best Pie Competition, with five categories of pies both savoury and sweet and with the winning pies being available for visitors to search out and chomp into.

Plus Pie Time's month-long celebrations will culminate in a two-day "Pie Fest" on the weekend of June 23 and 24 that showcases all things pies and their best accompanying wines, beers, ciders and spirits made in the Southern Highlands, and further afield, will this year be held at the vast Bong Bong Picnic Racecourse just outside Bowral to accommodate a greater number of stallholders and activities – and with plenty of visitor parking as last year over 4000 attended the weekend.

Organisers suggest pie-lovers interested in visiting this year's Pie Time book any accommodation needs early, and can do this and get any further information, by phoning Destination Southern Highlands on 1300 657 559 or visiting www.visitsouthernhighlands.com.au

And ask also about Pie Time's Pinot and Pie Tours, Pie Trike Tours and the Pie-cycle for cycling enthusiasts to enjoy their sport and a pie or three along the way.

Things To Do In Adelaide At Night

#seesouthaustralia #ATE18

Ghost stories, unique laneway bars, flavours of the world and shopping under the glow of the moon...what more could you want in Adelaide after dark? Pub rock or rooftop cocktails? You got it.

Dine with The Invincibles

The ghosts of sporting legends are your dinner companions when you take a table at the outstanding Hill Of Grace Restaurant. Occupying level three of the Eastern Stand at Adelaide Oval, you'll be looking over hallowed turf. And while you're in the neighbourhood, get along to a night game at one of the finest sports stadiums in Australia.

Go globe-trotting on Gouger St

Tour the world's cuisine on a single street. Gouger heroes include Star of Siam (Thai), Gaucho's (Argentine), Ky Chow (Chinese) and Wasai Japanese Kitchen (Japanese, self-explanatory really). Fancy a cocktail? Head to the Collins Bar at the Hilton Adelaide just around the corner.

Reclaim the pavement on Rundle St

The eating scene on Rundle St is similar to Gouger St, only it spills onto the street and the tempo is upped by shops, bars, pubs and clubs. Featuring the very best in cutting-edge fashion and leading designer labels, Rundle St is also the city's hub for events, street parades and parties.

Love the little laneways

When the liquor licensing laws changed in 2013, the small bar scene said 'thank you very much' and exploded – mostly in the small laneway quarter around Leigh St, Peel St and Gilbert Place. Today the precinct is a pocket rocket of inner city personality and boozy goodness. Do Udaberri, Clever Little Tailor and Hains & Co, then grab something to eat at Bread & Bone or the time-honoured Rigoni's Bistro.

Get the big picture at Windy Point Restaurant

It's a 20-minute cab ride from the city, but the views in this fine diner warrant the effort. The food at Windy Point Restaurant – not to mention panoramic views of the lights of Adelaide – guarantee a sparkling night.

Test the atmospherics at the Adelaide Night Market

Held on Sunday nights in summer, the Adelaide Night Market feels like a party after dark. It transforms the city's North Terrace into a garden filled with street food from around the world, gifts, jewellery, live music and much more.

Mix the rough with the smooth on Hindley Street

This notorious old strip is going through a reinvention where you can still find the good, the bad and the ugly. Do the oh-so-now at Bank Street Social, go old-school at the Woolshed ('seven bars, three levels, one club' plus bull-riding), or head to the old pharmacy that is The Apothecary 1878; one of the most lovely drinking experiences in town.

Give in to the music

From the city that brought you Jimmy Barnes, Doc Neeson, Paul Kelly and the Hilltop Hoods comes a thriving pub music scene. Try The Gov, Fowler's Live, Jive and the Wheatsheaf Hotel for some great local and international live acts.

Stroll the twilight sands of Glenelg

Pick a warm night and walk along the Glenelg foreshore. On weekends, the families are out on the lawns beneath palms and pines, watching the sun sink into the Gulf. Kick off your shoes, feel the heat go out of the sands – then head for the lively restaurant and hotel scene on Moseley Square.

Meet the ghosts

The old Adelaide Gaol: brutal stories and lively ghosts. Enough said. For those with a ghoulish nature, you can also try the walking tours of West Terrace Cemetery. Try a night one...if you dare.

Get high in Adelaide

With its river and parklands at heart, and hills in the distance, Adelaide's rooftops offer a great vantage point. 2KW has reached for the sky, serving cocktails at 30 metres atop a heritage-listed bank building. Views of the Oval, North Terrace and Cathedral are a knockout.
