Cruise tourism brings £4.2 million to the Falkland Islands

by Jake Downing - www.falklandnews.com

Results released today by the Falkland Islands Tourist Board reveal that cruise tourism brought almost £4.2 million revenue into the Falklands in the 2008-9 season. This figure includes spend on tours, shopping, food and beverage, as well as over £1.3 million in the form of government taxes and levies.

39% of cruise visitors were from the USA, followed by Canada (10%) and then the UK (8.6%). American tourists spent the most money per head, an average of £57.32, with visitors from the UK and other countries spending in the region of £39 per head.

To carry out the survey, 599 cruise and expedition vessel passengers were interviewed while they waited outside the Jetty Centre for their tenders to take them back to their vessel.

“What’s very promising”, said Jake Downing, General Manager of the Falkland Islands Tourist Board, “is that almost half of the 599 cruise passengers we surveyed expressed an interest in returning to the Falklands for a land-based holiday. This represents the potential for considerable economic benefit to the Falkland Islands, as land-based visitors spend on average £917 per head on the islands.”

Visitors from the UK were most likely to want to return for a land-based holiday, and the tourist board are now planning an annual programme of marketing activity in the UK to capitalise on this.

From Kabul to Mayfair: The Connaught Presents The Prince’s Lodge

For more than a century, The Connaught in London has stood as an emblem of discreet and authentic elegance in the charming Mayfair village. The legendary hotel has recently completed a £70 million restoration, ushering the landmark into the 21st century while preserving with great care its distinctive personality and intuitive style of service. In July 2009, The Connaught is opening its most recent addition to their gleamingly-restored guest rooms and suites – The Prince's Lodge.

Renowned designer Guy Oliver, in collaboration with The Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Afghanistan, has created The Prince's Lodge at The Connaught in a style inspired by the 19th century Peacock Palace in the old city of Kabul. The Turquoise Mountain Foundation was formed in 2006 by HRH The Prince of Wales to support and restore the historic districts of Kabul which have endured more than thirty years of war. The Foundation now employs 350 people and has restored forty buildings in the once-shining city. Students of the Foundation are trained in traditional disciplines, including hand-carving, pottery, adobe architecture, jewelry and glass making. The Prince's Lodge at The Connaught represents the Foundation's first commercial endeavor.

Opening the doors of Guest Room 518 at The Connaught unveils a space unlike any other in the iconic hotel. While other rooms and suites, also designed by Guy Oliver, offer a discreet English ambiance balanced with contemporary design, The Prince's Lodge boasts a hand-crafted approach. Upon entering the guest room, visitors will immediately recognize the unique design and atmosphere in The Prince's Lodge. The soaring vaulted double height ceiling displays antique oak beams; detailed oak paneling runs all around the perimeter of the sumptuous space. Hand-carved solid walnut cabinetry and paneling demonstrates the remarkable skill of the artisans who train with The Turquoise Mountain Foundation. Their tremendous talents are also apparent in the beautiful suite of carved furniture including the plush four poster bed which was the first to be carved in Kabul over one hundred years ago. Two vaulted window seats with carved peacocks and basket weave panels create magical spaces to relax and enjoy the view of Mayfair.

A pair of faithful reproductions of early-carved 19th century cabinets conceals a bar and dressing table while secret doors in the intricate paneling open to reveal an intimate study filled with art and architectural reference books, board games and other objets d'arts. Original maps, photographs and oil paintings grace the walls of the Prince's Lodge, creating the atmosphere a private retreat rather than a hotel guest room. A pair of French doors open widely, boasting views of London and an intimate walnut lined study, behind secret doors, contains art books and provides a peaceful space to read and work.

The stunning bathroom has a large double bath, double vanity and a separate white marble shower and steam room complete with marble bench seat. The Prince's Lodge provides a classical environment, however, technology is pervasive. For those who must remain in-the-know, a subtly-placed flat screen television to the right of the vanity allows guests to stay up to date on the latest news as well as their favorite shows.

Reminiscent of a room in a grand English country house, The Prince's Lodge at The Connaught is a truly unique space in one of the world's most beloved hotels. Guy Oliver's stunning design in The Prince's Lodge ideally complements the other unparalleled design elements found throughout the hotel.

From The Coburg Bar and Hélène Darroze at The Connaught, both designed by India Mahdavi, to The Connaught Bar, designed by David Collins, the restoration of The Connaught brought together a team of celebrated designers to refresh and redesign one of the world's most distinguished addresses.

QANTAS Marks 50 Years Of The Jet Age

Qantas today marked 50 years since it operated the world's first commercial passenger jet service across the Pacific.

Flight EM774, the first to be operated by Qantas' new Boeing 707 aircraft, departed Sydney Airport at 3.35pm on 29 July 1959, bound for San Francisco, via Nadi and Honolulu.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said the anniversary was a timely reminder of the airline's longevity on the Australia-US route.

"Qantas has a proud history on the Pacific route, having flown uninterrupted between Australia and the United States for 55 years," Mr Joyce said.

"It's a long and challenging route. Other airlines have come and gone, but our commitment to providing air links between the two countries has never wavered.

"Today we remain the largest carrier on the Pacific, operating 43 return services every week from eastern Australia and from Auckland to the US cities of Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco and offering an extended network of 36 destinations across the USA available through our network partners American Airlines and Alaska Airlines." Mr Joyce said Qantas had always been an early adopter of new aircraft technologies – as the first non-US airline to operate jet aircraft 50 years ago, having invented the Business Class cabin in 1979 and, most recently, as a lead buyer of the new generation Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

"Qantas has always looked to the future and sought to innovate," he said.

"Just as 50 years ago we made history and revolutionised the way Australians travelled to other continents, today we continue to embrace new aircraft technologies that drive further enhancements in safety, environmental performance and customer comfort.

"We're proud of our standing as the world's most experienced airline and we're working hard to be the safest, most punctual and customer-driven carrier anywhere in the world." Qantas will mark the 50th anniversary of the inaugural passenger jet flight today with a special ceremony at Sydney International Terminal prior to the departure of the QF73 Sydney-San Francisco service at 1.55pm.

Facts:

The four-engine Boeing 707 replaced propeller-driven, piston-engine aircraft such as the Lockheed Super Constellation L1049 "Connies", slashing travel times by almost half and revolutionising commercial aviation with new levels of passenger comfort.

The Constellation was limited in its altitude to 20,000 feet (6096m) and a cruising speed of 335 mph (539 kph), often in turbulent conditions. By contrast, the turbo-jet engine of the B707 enabled still-air cruising at 550 mph (885 kph) at altitudes between 35,000 feet and 40,000 feet (10,668 – 12,192m).

Australian travellers joined the jet era 50 years ago when Qantas flight EM774 departed Sydney Airport at 3.35pm on 29 July 1959, bound for Nadi, Honolulu and San Francisco. The flight reached San Francisco in a record time of 14 hours 57 minutes.

Qantas was the first airline in the world to operate commercial passenger jet services across the Pacific and the first non-US airline to operate jet aircraft.

Qantas achieved another first on 27 October 1959 by introducing the B707 jet on the Kangaroo Route between Australia and London, slashing the journey time to 33 hours, compared to 63 hours in the Connies. Today, operated by new A380 aircraft, the journey takes approximately 23 hours.

The Qantas Boeing 707 was configured with 24 seats in First Class and 60 in Tourist Class.

To prepare for the B707, Qantas spent millions of dollars constructing new hangars, an engine overhaul shop, a jet test cell, new equipment and parts and training for pilots and cabin crew, maintenance engineers and ground staff.

Indigenous Adventures Star in Latest Outer Edge Magazine

Australia's leading adventure and outdoor magazine, Outer Edge, has broken new ground in outdoor publishing by dedicating the majority of its latest edition (on shelves 29 July) to unearthing active Indigenous adventures across Australia and beyond.

"We believe it's a first for any outdoor magazine – to theme nearly an entire edition along Indigenous lines and specifically to focus on Indigenous adventures that go well beyond the stereotypical cultural tour options trotted out time and again as a core Indigenous tourism product," says editor, Patrick Kinsella.

"We knew that there were more action-packed Indigenous experiences for adventurers to enjoy out there, beyond the same-old bush tucker walks, it was just a matter of finding them. And find them we did, from mountain biking, paddling and trekking to snowshoeing, fishing and four-wheel driving. And there are plenty of Indigenous guides and adventurers out there pushing the edge of wilderness experiences, while also pushing the boundaries of Indigenous tourism to a more exciting level." The Outer Edge Indigenous Adventures-themed edition includes articles on trekking Songlines in the Blue Mountains, paddling in Victoria's Lake Tyres region, canoe building and spear fishing in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and a list of the Top Ten Indigenous Adventures, as selected by Ian Crawshaw, author of Australia Walkabout, the award-winning Indigenous travel guide.

Tourism Australia has lauded Outer Edge's initiative in highlighting active Indigenous adventures in Australia.

"I am excited that this edition of Outer Edge showcases the broad range and depth of Indigenous adventure experiences available across the country", says Aden Ridgeway, executive chairman of Indigenous Tourism Australia. "This is a fantastic initiative and it will provide readers with an opportunity to learn more about how to experience Aboriginal culture and lifestyle in a contemporary, adventurous and meaningful way."

"Australia's Indigenous culture sets us apart from other countries around the world. Our culture and our relationship with this extraordinary landscape, combines to provide travellers with a truly unique experience. There is no question that such an experience is becoming more and more important to Australians and international visitors planning to explore this vast country." While Australian Indigenous adventures are the core of the edition, Outer Edge also traveled abroad to get a taste of what's happening in Indigenous circles elsewhere. Outer Edge's deputy editor, Chris Ord, joined Vanuatu's first Indigenous adventure racing team to train with them – an experience that included a run up the slopes of a live volcano – as they prepare to compete in Queensland's 100km Hell's Bells adventure race.

Another article takes in the highs of a mountain bike race over the Himalayas, in which the local Nepali porters reign supreme. There's also a fascinating look at porter adventure events around the globe.

"And this special edition is just the beginning," said editor Patrick Kinsella. "Our support for Australia's Indigenous adventuring community will be ongoing and we plan to feature Indigenous adventure articles in as many future editions as possible. We're already looking at an Indigenous kitesurfing story on the Daintree coast and trekking in the footsteps of Jandamarra, an aboriginal freedom fighter in Western Australia." As Australia's leading adventure and outdoor recreational title, Outer Edge covers a range of pursuits including trekking, cycling, paddling, camping, off-road driving, fishing, snow sports, rock climbing, abseiling, adventure tourism, expeditions, and any other activity that involves fresh air, adrenaline and enjoyment. Besides practical adventure ideas and features, the content includes outdoor news, interviews and profiles, how-to, equipment pages and book and DVD reviews.

Outer Edge is sold in over 3000 newsagencies and outdoor stores (Anaconda and Paddy Pallin) around Australia for AUD$7.95 a copy, or AUD$39.95 for a one-year subscription.
