100 Years on the Western Front

July 2016 will mark 100 years since the Battles of Fromelles and Pozières on the Western Front, and from today Australians will be able to apply to attend the services in France to commemorate these important events as part of the Anzac Centenary.

For more details see the Department of Veterans' Affairs release on this link: http://bit.ly/1NtxSPm

For those interested in exploring the Somme by bicycle active holiday specialists Outdoor Travel, based in Bright, Victoria, offer Bike & Barge two-week cycling cruises from Paris to Bruges.  Tours spend 3 days in the Somme, mooring at Peronne near the Australian memorial site at Villers Bretonneaux or the Fourth Division memorial near Riqueval. They also visit the site where the WW1 amnesty was signed in a forest clearing near Compiegne in France.

Bike & Barge cycling cruise departures are scheduled throughout 2016 from April to October. There is a departure date in July for this interested in extending their holiday to attend the commemorations – see: http://bit.ly/1YMhOfz

Bike & Barge cruises combine cycling and river cruising allowing partners of different abilities and interests to holiday together (trips are just as interesting for leisure cyclists OR enthusiasts), unpack once and come 'home' each night to a wonderful meal and a comfortable cabin with your own bathroom.

This is a great opportunity to explore varied and interesting countryside, visiting historic and cultural centres, sampling the wine, beer and local produce that makes this part of Belgium and France famous.  Each day you can join our cycle-guide on a bike-tour, go by yourself by bike and meet up with the group at the boat or stay on the boat to enjoy the cruise.  In the evenings the guide offers a city-walk or other activities.

Well-maintained multi-geared bicycles with panniers are provided and a fascinating and varied guided cycling program with free time to explore each day's destination.

Outdoor Travel offer a choice of dates & four very different barges this route – details can be found on these links: http://bit.ly/1MZOvAQ or http://bit.ly/1jCblnr  or http://bit.ly/1SB6nU5
