It's safe to travel to New Zealand's South Island - Adventure South offers 20% off to encourage travellers

Christchurch tour operator encourages travellers with 20% Saving on Otago Rail Trail

Christchurch based active travel company, Adventure South, is advising travellers that it is safe to travel to the Canterbury region of New Zealand and that all their tours are still operating as scheduled.  Last week's devastating earthquake has had no impact on the wilderness regions where they operate and travellers will actually help local people by choosing to travel to this spectacular part of New Zealand.

To encourage Australians to travel to the South Island, Adventure South has extended their 20% discount on the popular 5-day Otago Rail Trail Classic cycle tour for all new bookings before 31 March. This iconic cycling tour usually retails for AU$995pp, however those who confirm their place during March can secure any April departure for only AU$796pp. The price includes professional cycling guides, 4 night's accommodation, all breakfasts and dinners, private coach transport, helmets and cycle bags, all national park fees as well as a ticket on the spectacular Taieri Gorge Railway to Dunedin.

"It is safe to travel. Fortunately, our staff and their families and homes are all safe and well, and our depot and offices came through this tragedy without any major issues.  The earthquake was localized to Christchurch and there has been no impact whatsoever in the regions where our trips, such as the Otago Rail Trail, are operating, "said Geoff Gabites, Managing Director of Adventure South.

"We are currently fielding enquiries from concerned clients who want to know if we are open for business.  Our message is very simple - our trips are operating as normal.  Ensuring our business continuation allows for some 20 staff to thrive in their professional lives as much as they can during this time.  There is nothing better at the moment than having a role that requires you to focus on the tasks ahead," said Geoff.

Adventure South, like most travel businesses, believes that the tourism dollar benefits the wider community.  Traveller's income is used to buy food and fuel, pay for a wide variety of accommodation and generally the impact of the holiday dollar is spread as far and as wide as possible.  "Tourism revenues are an important part of the rebuild process for the people and businesses of Christchurch. We are all very keen to see life return to normality as soon as possible," said Geoff.

For bookings and more details call Adventure South on 1800 10 70 60 or visit adventuresouthnz.com.au

About: Adventure South operates cycling and walking tours across New Zealand's North and South Islands.  Established in 1992, Adventure South generates hundreds of thousands of dollars in to the Canterbury economy each year by providing more than 750 active travel tours in the region. In 2010, Adventure South became a division of World Expeditions, Australia's first adventure travel company.

Unique opportunity to travel with documentary filmmakers to the Serengeti!

In an unprecedented holiday offering, Australian travellers are being given the opportunity to do a behind the scenes tour of the Serengeti, in what is essentially a back-stage-pass with a working documentary film crew.

Australian wildlife photographers and cinematographers, Clive and Anne Arnold have spent the last 25 years working with African wildlife having produced five documentaries. For the last eight years they have also been taking Australian travellers on African safari tours to the places they have filmed and worked in.  However, now they are combining their two vocations to create a truly a unique 'hands-on' travel experience like no other.

The couple is offering Australian travellers the chance to go behind the scenes in an off-road, all access filming tour of the Serengeti, as they film and photograph footage for their next documentary.   Given the nature of the "working holiday", the experience is so exclusive that the holiday will be offered only twice with only six spots available each time. "We have been making documentaries for the last 20 years, travelling off road and into special no access areas of national parks.  We've seen wildebeests giving birth, we've followed leopards to where they hide their cubs and even observed and tracked a lion on its hunt and now we are giving travellers a unique special backstage pass to join us and see these experiences first hand as we gather footage for our next documentary", said Anne adding. "A highlight of the two week holiday will including sitting in the middle of a wildlife migration and observing the animals in their natural habitat.  There will be literally hundreds of thousands of animals all around us".

While the couple has travelled to the Serengeti several times to gather footage for the documentary, they have never invited people to join them. Each documentary takes on average more than two years to produce.  The coming documentary which they are inviting travellers to join them on, will focus on the great migration of wildebeest and zebra in the Masai Mara and Serengeti and includes the birthing of wildebeest during the migration route.

"Our clients have walked with lions and cheetahs, experienced elephant back safaris, micro-chipping rhinos and fed vultures and now they can look forward to a once-in a lifetime opportunity to explore the Serengeti, one of the world's best known wildlife sanctuaries like never before", says Anne.

Clive and Anne also boast a wealth of local knowledge having grown up in Africa, before moving to Australia 10 years ago and establishing Safaris into Africa.  They speak the local African languages such as Zulu, Khoza, Ndebele and specialise in African cultures and tribes such as the Bushman, Himba and Masai tribes. The duo are also keen conservationists in both Australia and Africa and have had their documentaries regularly featured in National Geographic.

Those interested in exploring Africa in this truly unique way can talk to Clive and Anne at the up coming Travel XPOs in Melbourne, March 19 – 20, Sydney from March 26 – 27 and Brisbane April 15 – 17.  The couple will be conducting seminars and telling-all about their behind the scenes tour of the Serengeti.

New luxury accommodation in Daylesford Macedon Ranges

Two recently opened properties put a unique spin on luxury accommodation in the Daylesford Macedon Ranges proving this beautiful part of Victoria is more than just a delight for day-trippers – it’s the perfect place for a mini-break as well.

Firstly, internationally renowned Daylesford enterprise Lake House goes from strength to strength with the opening on Christmas Day of The Retreat at Lake House. Suitable for one or two couples, The Retreat is more than luxurious – it’s super luxurious – and super secluded too, hidden within a walled complex with direct access to the lake foreshore.

New luxury accommodation in Daylesford Macedon RangesAlong with the most splendid of appointments (such as heated bathroom floors and hand-selected pieces from Olly of San Francisco), guests of Retreat at Lake House are treated to an array of interior spaces, and courtyards and decks, including hot tub and outdoor fire pit, an extensive library, cocktail bar, temperature-controlled wine fridge, massage pavilion, and garden of quince, medlar and dogwood. Early evening butler cocktail service for drinks before dinner completes the picture.

Another property recently opened in the region is Twigs on High. One of the hidden treasures of Trentham, this former retail store and café has been converted by a local interior designer into the quirkiest kind of two-bedroom accommodation for sleeping up to four people.

Described as “relaxed rustic Australiana marries French provincial chic”, the idea is to eschew technology for the simpler charms, although sophistication and comfort are high on the agenda. Decor includes curios and objét d'art wherever you look, American designer wallpapers, Laura Ashley linen, bentwood chairs, comfy lounges and ultra-modern fireplaces.

The layout of Twigs on High incorporates sitting room, piano, breakfast nook, dining room, sunroom, and kitchen and bar. A generous sundeck at the rear provides a space for daybed snoozing and alfresco dining, and a cobble-stoned courtyard features a hexagonal candlelit gazebo for everything from family meals to fully decorated 'special occasion' dining. Conveniently, The Cosmo fine dining restaurant is stumbling distance right across the road.

COLOURFUL SYDNEY HOTEL WITH CITY'S 'BEST VIEWS' REOPENS IN HEART OF KINGS CROSS - AND BREAKS SYDNEY'S ROOM DROUGHT

Mercure Potts Point opens in time for Mardi Gras with rates from $199

Landmark Potts Point hotel The Crest, considered to have some of Sydney's best views, reopens today as the Mercure Sydney Potts Point and will return a much-needed 227 rooms to Sydney's tight room supply. The owners, Australand, have appointed Accor to manage the property after it had been closed for almost two years.

The hotel's relaunch comes at a time when Potts Point and the surrounding Kings Cross and Darlinghurst areas are undergoing a real gentrification that has brought a touch of class to their urban edginess. A high level of development in the commercial, retail and residential sectors has seen Potts Point become one of Sydney's most vibrant communities, with more than 250 restaurants, cafes and bars within walking distance of the hotel.

The former Crest has legendary status in Sydney's hotel scene and was recently upgraded with a $30 million refurbishment, with new furniture and fittings and a funky, modern design by Marques Interiors.

Set high on Victoria Street above Kings Cross Station, the Mercure Sydney Potts Point offers spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney's east and boasts a huge outdoor terrace and four meeting rooms  for up to 300 delegates so it's perfect for both business and leisure travellers.

Sydney has suffered a massive rooms shortage since 2000, with Accor's Sydney hotels consistently running between 80% and 90% occupancy throughout 2010, so the addition of these quality rooms will have an enormous impact on the city's infrastructure. The Mercure will effectively provide the first "new" rooms in Sydney since the Ibis King St Wharf opened in 2008.

Within walking distance of the Mercure are a host of attractions including great boutique shopping on Macleay St, several theatres, Tusculum, Elizabeth Bay House and more. Embarkation Park, Fitzroy Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens are all easily accessible on foot.

In addition to being at the heart of Sydney's premier dining and entertainment district, the Mercure is also just a short stroll from cosmopolitan Woolloomooloo and just one train stop from Martin Place in the city centre. Bondi Beach is about 10 minutes drive away.

The Mercure name will bring truly global branding to the hotel and will see the introduction of the brand's famous Grands Vins wine list as well as the Pure

Pleasures elements which make any stay at Mercure special.

Mercure is the largest mid-market hotel brand in Australia, with 28 hotels in key locations across the country and more than 670 hotels in 50 countries globally.

For more than 35 years, within the Accor Group, Mercure has exemplified expert hospitality and personalised service. Operating in more than 50 countries around the world, Mercure boasts hotels with distinctive personalities carefully preserved through the type of services offered and the decor, both of which vary from one hotel to the next. The hotel managers and staff of the 700 Mercure hotels are hospitality professionals. Attentive and available, they are ready to listen and make sure their guests enjoy a stay full of genuine moments of pleasure and relaxation in a truly warm and comfortable setting.
