Lonely Planet launches Audio Phrasebooks for iPhone

Lonely Planet today announced its Audio Phrasebooks for iPhone and iPod touch are now available for sale on the Apple App Store, providing travellers with mobile access to its best-selling phrasebook content in 10 languages.

"The iPod touch and iPhone are exciting new devices for travellers that can serve a number of their needs when on the road. In combination with the Apple App Store we now have a complete ecosystem for developing and distributing a new generation of compelling travel products to our community," said Chris Boden, Lonely Planet's director of global business development.

"It's obvious that travellers are increasingly using technology to enhance their journeys. No matter where you are in the world, with your iPhone or iPod touch and a little help from Lonely Planet, you'll be conversing like a local," said Boden.

Each Audio Phrasebook application includes over 600 spoken (and phonetically written) phrases, covering everything from health (I'm allergic to antibiotics) to going out (Where can I find a pub?). Applications are currently available for English speakers with phrase translations in Mandarin, Cantonese, Czech, Thai, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Vietnamese – with the Mandarin Phrasebook offered free for a limited time to coincide with the Beijing Olympics.

Drawing heavily on the intuitive layout of Lonely Planet's print phrasebooks, the iPhone applications allow users to easily select a relevant phrase category such as Greetings or Eating Out, by simply tapping that category on the iPhone's touch screen and then flicking through corresponding phrases using the iPhone's innovative Multi-Touch feature to find the phrase they need. A further tap shows the foreign language translation and plays the audio through the iPhone's speakers - enabling the phrasebooks to be used as both a translation and learning tool.

Like their much-loved guidebooks, Lonely Planet's phrasebooks have become an indispensable tool for travellers, with a portfolio covering over 100 languages from Arabic to Zulu, and annual sales of 1 million copies. The iPhone applications take the company's paper-based phrasebooks to a new level with the inclusion of spoken audio recorded using native language speakers.

Lonely Planet also plans to provide more language combinations over the next few months, such as French to Mandarin.

In a 2008 Lonely Planet survey of over 18,000 travellers worldwide, 80% said they use their mobile phone 'always' or 'sometimes' when travelling. And 56% said they took their iPod with them when on holiday.

Lonely Planet's Audio Phrasebooks are available for US$9.99 / AU$12.99 / £5.99 / €7.99  from Apple's App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/

To celebrate the launch of iPhone 3G and the Beijing Olympics, free downloads of the Mandarin Audio Phrasebook are available until 24 August, 2008.

Bondi's bikini world record is in jeapordy

Bondi babes watch out – the women of Tees Valley in North East England are rising to the challenge to break the world record for the largest number of women photographed in bikinis at the same time.

[Pictured: the "warm" up session!]

At 11am this Sunday, July 20, the world record attempt will be made at Redcar beach, situated on the southern coastline of North East England, when the local girls will attempt to break the current record of 1,010 women which was set on Australia's Bondi Beach last September.

The Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club is heading up the challenge and those involved will no doubt be braving the inevitable North Sea chill and lot sof goose bumps even in their summer month.

It is hoped their efforts will raise up to £20,000 (AUD $40,870) for the Great North Air Ambulance.

"I was browsing the internet about world records and saw a picture from the Bondi Beach event." "It looked very staged - most of the girls had the same type of bikini and had obviously been brought in and I just thought we could do better than 1,010,” said Mike Robson, IT manager at Cleveland Cable Company, who is organising the event.

"Then in Miami, where they tried and failed to beat the record, they were offering incentives like designer bikinis, yet they still didn't do it!

"I don't think the girls of North East England will need any incentives to be up for this, especially as it's for such a good cause," concluded Mike.

Brr the thought if it makes you shiver!

MERCURE HOTELS GIVE VISITORS A REAL TASTE OF NSW WITH LAUNCH OF SPECIALIST NSW ‘GRANDS VINS’ WINE LIST

Visitors to NSW will now be able to get a real taste of the State with the launch of “Grands Vins Mercure”, a new specialist wine list that showcases some of the most attractive wines from NSW – at equally attractive prices.

It is part of a national launch of Mercure Grands Vins, which has seen State-based specialist wine lists produced for NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia.

Mercure is the first hotel group in Australia to develop such a range of regionally-based wine lists, designed to give visitors an introduction to the distinctive characteristics of each State’s wines.

The new NSW Mercure Grands Vins selection is available at Mercure Sydney, Mercure Sydney Airport and Mercure Parramatta.

Wines come principally from vineyards in the Hunter Valley region, recognised as NSW’s premier wine area, but also from Tumburumba, Mudgee and Canberra.

NSW’s famed semillon, chardonnay and shiraz varietals are heavily featured in the selection, along with verdelho and merlot based wines.

Accor Regional General Manager NSW, Mark Ronfeldt, said that the launch of the NSW wine list was not only significant for the local wine industry, but also for the State’s tourism industry.

“When visitors come to NSW they want to get an appreciation of the destination in many ways, and particularly through our wine and cuisine,” said Mr Ronfeldt.

“Strangely, whereas hotels in most other States tend to champion their local wines, in NSW that is not generally the case. NSW has a long and distinguished history as a world-class wine producer and many of the State’s regions – such as the Hunter Valley and Mudgee – have built a substantial tourism industry around their wine reputation, so we believe it is time for hotels and restaurants to show greater support for NSW wines. We want our guests to get a real taste of the State, even if they don’t get the opportunity to visit the vineyards.

“Mercure hotels have always positioned themselves as the ‘keys to the region’, providing an authentic taste of the city or the region in which they operate, so the Grands Vins selection is a perfect addition to the brand’s offering.

“What is really important with the Grands Vins wine list is the pricing. We want to dispel the myth that good wine is only associated with high-end restaurants and high-end prices. Mercure’s Grands Vins shows it is possible to enjoy great wines – many from smaller vineyards - at very attractive prices, by both the glass and by the bottle.”

Wines are available from $6 by the glass and $31 by the bottle.

Every wine offered has been selected by an expert tasting panel comprising sommeliers, wine connoisseurs and food and beverage professionals, and, importantly, final judging was conducted with appropriate food courses to ensure the wines are “food friendly”. Some 80% of wine sold at Mercure hotels is consumed with food, so compatibility with food was a major judging criteria.

The Grands Vins wine list is designed to make wine selection easier, grouping wines in four particular styles – fresh and tasty; fruity and light; balanced & elegant and spicy and full bodied – to help guests choose the most suitable wine for every occasion and for every dish, while introducing wines from a range of distinctive wineries that guests might not otherwise have a chance to experience.

To support the Grands Vins offer, each Mercure has trained a group of wine waiters (Echanson in French) to provide assistance to guests with their wine selection in an approachable and less formal manner. To provide the service, Accor’s own Academie Accor has developed specific wine education programmes in conjunction the Australian Wine Corporation, with four nationally recognised competency levels available to service staff.

The Mercure Grands Vins regional lists complement each hotel’s standard wine list, which together provide a comprehensive range of Australian wines. Mercure Grands Vins was first introduced in France in 1983, and the programme celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Grands Vins lists are available in 20 countries around the world.

Within Accor, Mercure embodies the hospitality know-how that makes every stay unique.

For both business and leisure travels, the 758 Mercure hotels form a family united around common values: the specific personality of each establishment, the quality of the attention reserved to each client, its cultural reflection of the city and the region, the Grands Vins Mercure…

Comfort, service quality and hospitality are the foundations of the reputation of all Mercure hotels in 49 countries. For more information go to www.mercurehotels.com

Accor, the European leader and a major global group in hotels, the global leader in services to corporate clients and public institutions, operates in nearly 100 countries with 170,000 employees. It offers to its clients over 40 years of expertise in its two core businesses:

- Hotels, with the Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, Ibis, all seasons, Etap Hotel, Formule 1 and Motel 6 brands, representing more than 4,000 hotels and nearly 500,000 rooms in 90 countries, as well as strategically related activities, such as LenĂ´tre.

Medical Benefits of Vacationing

Doctor's Orders – Take a Vacation

Benefits of Travel Include Better Overall Health, Dramatic Decrease in Heart Disease

The next time you visit your doctor you could walk away with this prescription: "Take a two week vacation, twice a year."

Marilyn Downing Staff, founder and owner of Asia Transpacific Journeys, a luxury travel company specializing in travel to Asia, is primed to fulfill doctor's orders for quality downtime.

Recent studies published in the British Medical Journal and featured in Time magazine reveal strong evidence that time off is good medicine. For example:

•       Chronic work-related stress caused can nearly double your risk of heart disease and diabetes
•       Long-term exposure to stress at work appears to have a direct adverse effect on the autonomic nervous system
•       An annual vacation of at least two weeks can cut the risk of heart attack in men by 32% and in women by 50%
"These are startling statistics," says Downing Staff.

"People are beginning to view travel – like a gym membership -- as an investment in their health. When you consider the long-term costs associated with stress-related illnesses, travel is very inexpensive by comparison. And let's face it, a lot more fun."

"We all know that going on vacation makes you feel healthier, more relaxed, rejuvenated and improves your mood. Now medical studies show this isn't just anecdotal. The only question left is: How soon can you pack your bags?"

Because vacations recharge and rejuvenate, the research shows vacations also increase performance on the job when you return to the office. Everyone benefits, including the bottom line.
