Ten True Blue Ways to Spend Australia Day

If the annual BBQ with your mates or your Mum’s sloppy Pavlova just won’t cut the mustard this Australia Day, Intrepid Travel has put together a top ten list of unique but fair dinkum experiences to do on Australia Day. So get in touch with your inner Aussie and discover what truly makes Australia the ‘Lucky Country’.

1. Marvel at the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest
Spend Australia Day in the most diverse eco-system in the world, the Daintree Rainforest. Untouched tropical rainforest and golden beaches make the Daintree Rainforest home to some of Australia’s famous flora and fauna. This World Heritage Listed area contains the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare anywhere in the world. Intrepid Travel’s East Coast Explorer ends in Cairns, the gateway to the Daintree on Australia Day.

2. Barefoot bowls with the locals in Cunnamulla
There’s nothing more Aussie than experiencing the outback town of Cunnamulla in Western Queensland. Celebrate Australia Day by having a yarn with the locals over a game of barefoot lawn bowls, beer and a barbeque. Top off the spirit of mate-ship by visiting the ANZAC monument at dusk. Intrepid Travel’s Essence of the Outback will spend time at Cunnamulla on Australia Day.

3. Swap the pub hop for the island hop
Swap the pub-hop for the island-hop this Australia Day and see some of Australia's best beaches. Snorkel in and around Hervey Bay, Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island to discover sunken shipwrecks, lagoons and meet some new underwater friends along the way. Intrepid Travel’s Fraser Island & Reef Experience will visit Hervey Bay, Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island this Australia Day.

4. Watch the Milky Way put on a spectacular show!
Forget the 3D cinema, and why not head to Australia's red centre and see the real stars in the night sky. Each night, Mother Nature's Milky Way and Southern Cross put on a spectacular light show. This Australia Day, watch the magic unfold from the comfort of your swag by the campfire in the desert. Intrepid Travel's Outback Tracks will be in the red centre this Australia Day.

5. Explore Uluru
Find your inner Jillaroo or Jackaroo and visit the Outback Camel Farm. No one said saddles are just for horses so giddy up and enjoy the ride. Spend the afternoon exploring Uluru, watching it turn magnificent shades of red in the sunset on Australia Day. Intrepid Travel’s Uluru Express will spend the night at Uluru this Australia Day.

6. Sunrise at Kata Tjuta
Rather than waking up to the sound of your alarm clock, wake up on Australia Day to the sounds of nature and watch the sunrise over Kata Tjuta’s magnificent 36 red domes. Minute by minute the domes take on different shades as the light changes. Intrepid Travel’s Central Rock & Canyon wakes up to Kata Tjuta this Australia Day.

7. Aussie wildlife and wilderness
Experience all of the wildlife and wilderness Australia is famous for on one small island. Kangaroo Island is popular for stunning beaches, forests and desert dunes and while you’re at it meet some of the Island’s locals including koalas, wallabies and sea lions on their turf. Intrepid Travel’s Kangaroo Island explores Kangaroo Island this Australia Day.

8. Climb a mountain
With stunning gorges, lakes, peaks, moors, and a vast variety of wildlife, escape the hustle and bustle, pack the hiking boots and trek Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain. Flee the Australia Day crowds and soak up the piece and quiet in this nature haven. Intrepid Travel’s Tassie Explorer treks Cradle Mountain this Australia Day.

9. Cross the Nullarbor
Ditch the windowless, cramped office for four wheels. Hit the Nullarbor Plain for 1200km of stunning scenery, arid terrain and maybe an encounter with a kangaroo on the beach (or a UFO!). Intrepid Travel’s Western Wildlife Experience crosses the Nullarbor this Australia Day.

10. Learn to surf at Bondi Beach
For many Australia Day wouldn’t be complete without a day at the beach. Learn to surf at Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most iconic locations and afterwards enjoy a local favourite, fish and chips on the beach. Intrepid Travel’s Bondi Beach Urban Adventure surfs Bondi Beach this Australia Day.
So slip, slop, slap, pack the aeroguard and have a bloody good day.
