Reconnect with Family Fun

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a family trip to the nation’s capital. Discover the fun side of Canberra and let an array of experiences ignite your imagination.

Immerse yourself in a rural lifestyle at Redbrow Garden in Murrumbateman, only 20 minutes from Canberra. Pick seasonal fruit and organic berries or pat the alpacas. Parents will enjoy sipping a glass of wine by the tranquil lake while the kids feed the ducks.

Venture into the delightful and meticulously crafted miniature world of Cockington Green Gardens. Set within beautifully landscaped gardens, the park features a quaint English village, Scottish castle and an International display area featuring miniature buildings representing 30 countries. Ride the mini steam train around the village and grab a coffee and bite to eat at the nearby Gold Creek Village.

Learn about all things water at the Questacon — the National Science and Technology Centre’s Our Water exhibition. Sponsored by the National Water Commission, this hands-on exhibition delves into the different ways of using and preserving this precious resource. Young scientists are encouraged to see, hear, feel and do amazing things at the Mini Q exhibition, designed especially for little people.

At the Australian War Memorial place a red poppy on the Roll of Honour, experience the sound and light show of a Lancaster Bomber night raid over Berlin and see history come to life with Over the front: the great war in the air, featuring original aircraft and an exciting visual depiction of military flight directed by Peter Jackson. Kids can crawl through a First World War trench, climb into a helicopter from the Vietnam War and explore the inside of a Cold War submarine at the interactive Discovery Zone.

Take an interactive journey through Australia’s science history at CSIRO Discovery. See research in action in the laboratories. Don a lab coat and conduct your own experiments, see medical advances in health and wellbeing, and discover the latest on energy and climate.
Go behind the scenes to meet and feed some of the National Zoo & Aquarium’s favourite animals. Interact with monkeys, otters, giraffes, penguins, dingoes and more on the Family Tour. Become a zookeeper for the day during the Walk On The Wildside tour. This ultimate wildlife experience includes activities such as weighing a lion, hand feeding and patting a shark, making toys for the animals and preparing their food. Participants must be 12 years and over.

Hire a bike from Mr Spokes Bike Hire or Row ‘n Ride Bike Hire Company and ride around Lake Burley Griffin. Standard, tandem and family bikes are available for hire. Ride past Captain Cook Jet and the Carillion, feeding the ducks along the way. Stop at many of the attractions enroute for a bite to eat at their cafes.

Book an Off-the-Street session at Canberra Glassworks and make your very own glass masterpiece in world-class studios in 20 minutes. You’ll feel like a true artist as you experience the movement of molten glass in the Hotshop, assemble glass that will be fused together in the Glassworks' kilns, or create your own unique bead with a hot torch. Bookings are essential for the Off-the-Street sessions, which run weekends only.

There’s plenty to see and do in the capital this spring. So come on, see for yourself!
