Celebrating 100 years of Great Weekends

The modern two day weekend began just 100 short years ago. Here's how it happened.

1914
The revolution begins. Factory bosses and automobile tycoons first start shortening hours on Saturdays.

1921
Aussies spread their wings with the beginning of the airline industry.

1926
Henry 'Model T' Ford popularises the practice by rolling two day weekends out across his factories.

1945
First Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

1960
Budgie smugglers launched. Many shocked.

1971
Aussies enjoy the first one day cricket match.

1975
By Whitlam's decree, mail is no longer delivered on Saturdays.

1982
Loverboy release their smash hit, 'Working For The Weekend'.

1994
January 26 becomes a national public holiday - which makes Australia Day only 20 years old.
