Flying from Australia at the start of the holiday, you arrive in Rome to spend two nights in a four-star hotel in Rome’s central Termini precinct, not far from the Colosseum and the Museo Nazionale Romano.

Time to visit St Peters, the Vatican, the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain before boarding ms Eurodam.

One of the line’s new Signature-class ships, ms Eurodam is a stylish, mid-size, four-star vessel with 11 passenger decks and all amenities. The cruise includes all shipboard main meals (excluding specialty restaurants).

Attractions aboard include the Mainstage show lounge, with talented vocalists, dancers, illusionists, comedians and variety acts. Other touches include Explorations Café powered by The New York Times, where you can browse an extensive library, surf the internet and check email or simply read the morning paper.

On the cruise, soak up the atmosphere of Cartagena in Spain’s Murcia region, then visit the British Mediterranean outpost of Gibraltar on the southern tip of Spain. Spend a day in the graceful Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

Other highlights include two visits to Copenhagen, with the final one spending a night aboard ship in the city. The cruise visits the Estonian capital of Tallinn, with preserved medieval walls, cobbled squares and towers. Then an overnight aboard ship in St Petersburg, Russia’s great imperial city and repository of art, where you’ll stay for two days. Onward to Helsinki for a day, with the following day in Stockholm, Sweden.

From the German port of Warnemunde, you can head to amazing Berlin – long a world capital of art, culture, and architecture – or arrange your own shorter trip to somewhere like Lübeck, a hidden gem.

There are lesser-known delights as well: a day to wander the old maritime quarter of O Berbés in the Spanish Galician city of Vigo; a day in the Spanish port of Cadiz; and a day in Dorset, a county on the south coast of England’s West Country. You’ll visit the Dorset town of Portland, actually an island, even though it is linked to the mainland by Chesil Beach. You’ll visit Cherbourg in France and the coastal city of Zebrugge in Belgium, gateway to Bruges, a city that looks like the backdrop for a fairy tale.

If you’re feeling energetic at your final cruise destination, Copenhagen, try climbing the extraordinary corkscrew spire at the Church of Our Saviour.

Perhaps sip a sensational Danish beer before farewelling Copenhagen and flying back to Australia.
