Go Wild with Lord Howe Walks

There is no better way to see Lord Howe Island than by foot, traversing this spectacular ecological gem via a series of well-marked trails.

Whether seeking an active holiday in the great outdoors or wishing to discover the amazing array of Lord Howe’s endemic species, this is a walker’s paradise. Each day come back to the comfort of Arajilla Retreat. There are plenty of choices to suit a wide range of abilities. The most challenging is the eight-hour Mt Gower hike, with ropes and gusto required.

Here is a five day suggested walker's itinerary to discover amazing Lord Howe:

Day 1 – Orientate: Arrive on spectacular Lord Howe and settle into your Arajilla Suite. Take a leisurely stroll to the Village and along the shores of the Lagoon.

Day 2 – Warm up: take a 2 to 3 hour walk to North Bay, Kims Lookout and Malabar (unguided). It will take 4 hours if you stop and have a picnic and swim at North Bay! Majestic Island views and some hill work to get there.

Day 3 – Go remote: enjoy a 5-hour walk to uninhabited Boat Harbour on the remote south-east of Lord Howe. Here birds follow you through the islands tropical rainforest. Have lunch and cool your feet at beautiful Boat Harbour (unguided).

Day 4 – Take the challenge: the 4-hour walk to Goat House Cave is a tough one, straight up the green slopes of Mt. Lidgbird, with the satisfying reward of spectacular views back across the Island. See if you can spot a nesting red tailed tropic bird at the top (unguided). Alternatively test your vertical limits and participate in the ultimate Mt Gower full day climb, guided by Jack Shick, a 5th generation islander, naturalist and photographer. Jack has over 1,400 climbs to the summit. The walk operates twice-weekly.

Day 5 – Departure: After a leisurely Arajilla breakfast you are transferred to Lord Howe Island Airport for your return QantasLink flight to Sydney or Brisbane.
