New Segway Eco Tours on the Beaches of the Illawarra

The pristine beaches and hinterland of the Illawarra on the NSW South Coast can now be explored during high-tech adventures aboard Segway personal transporters.

New business, Segway Tours South Coast, has begun offering eco adventure tours for individuals, families and groups in Killalea State Park near Shellharbour, with all riders receiving a 10 per cent discount on accommodation at the 4.5-star Sebel Harbourside Kiama.

Santa on a Segway on South CoastSegway Tours South Coast has been established by husband and wife team and parents of two children, David and Jennifer Munn, who gave up professional careers after falling in love with the $10,000 electric vehicles and deciding to marry the scenery of the South Coast with the growing appeal of the futuristic Segways.

Segway tours from 30 to 90 minutes are available at beautiful Killalea State Park, 90 minutes south of Sydney between Shellharbour and Kiama. The sprawling 265-hectare coastal reserve protects extensive, swan-filled wetlands and seabird breeding areas, pockets of rainforests, Aboriginal heritage and two of the South Coast’s prettiest beaches, Killalea Beach which is home to the famous surf break, ‘The Farm’, and Minnamurra Beach or ‘Mystics’ as surfers call this long stretch of sand.

The signature 90-minute trip to “The Farm’ offers a guided environmental tour of the tranquil lagoons and along old jeep tracks leading through the forest and dunes down to Killalea Beach where riders, standing on the head-turning machines, can enjoy the unique thrill of gliding effortlessly and quietly along the golden sands just metres from the surf.

All tours include 30 minutes of instruction and practice on the self-balancing, two-wheeled Segways, which are easy to use, extremely manoeuvrable, ‘intuitive’ to operate and fun to ride. Just lean in the direction you want to travel and the low-impact Segway will move without any hand or foot operation. The Segways, which can reach speeds of 20 km/h, are suitable for anyone aged 10 and over weighing up to 117kg. Tours accommodate a maximum of eight riders.

“Our Segways offer an innovative, sustainable and very exciting way to experience the beauty of Killalea,” said David Munn, adding that team-building group experiences at any location had also been introduced, with obstacle courses, time trials and ball sports available. Special occasions such as birthdays and even weddings were also catered for. “Most people can’t stop smiling as soon as they start riding the Segways.”
Tours run on weekends and during school holidays and are available from $39 (30 mins) to $89 (90-minute tour to ‘The Farm’), including tuition, bottled water and sunscreen. All riders also receive a 10 per cent discount on accommodation off the day’s best rate at the Sebel Harbourside Kiama, with tariffs at the seaside hotel, including the discount, available from $170 per room per night. Accommodation is subject to availability and rates can change according to seasons.  Guests can show their Segway booking confirmation at The Sebel to receive the discount. Gift vouchers are also available.
