New Ghost Tour of 175-Year Old Menangle House Fridays June 27, July 25 and August 22, 2014

The historic Macarthur region near Sydney has long been known for the spirits that are said to inhabit its colonial dwellings, and a new guided ghost tour of Menangle House will invite ghost hunters to see for themselves.

The tours are held once a month on Friday nights, with the next events on June 27July 25 and August 22 (further dates to be announced soon) and are hosted by psychic mediums Tracey-Lee and Elisa Greenfield. The event includes a two course meal, psychic readings and a tour of the 175 year-old Menangle House.

menangle houseOriginally built by convicts in 1834 when Macarthur was still a small colonial outpost, Menangle House operated as 'The Horse and Jockey Inn' for many years, and was divided into two sections - one for the lower class and one for the upper.

The bar has since been restored to its original form and boasts the only working servery hatch from the time still surviving in Australia. The old inn now forms part of the Menangle House complex along with more modern bars, restaurants and courtyards – all overlooking the Macarthur countryside.

The historic inn is said to be haunted by the spirits of those who stayed and worked there, and staff regularly find that items appear to be moved by mischievous ghosts.

Macarthur is also home to one of Australia's most famous ghosts, Fred Fisher, who was an ex-convict and mysteriously disappeared from his Campbelltown farm in 1826. Soon after, respectable farmer John Farley stumbled into a local hotel in a state of shock. He claimed to have seen the ghost of Fred Fisher sitting on the rail of a bridge over a creek, pointing to the remains of Fisher’s body in a nearby paddock.

The remains were indeed uncovered in the paddock, and a neighbour who had murdered Fisher for his possessions was later hanged. Fisher’s Ghost Festival is held in Campbelltown every November.

Described by organisers as "mystical, enlightening and maybe even frightening", the Menangle House Ghost Tours will be held on Fridays June 27July 25 and August 22, 2014, at 170 Menangle Road, Menangle Park in the Macarthur region. Tickets are $120 per person, which includes two course meal, psychic readings and the tour. More details can be found at the 'What's on' page of www.macarthur.com.au, or by calling 0431 281 334.
