As one of Australia’s premier whale-watching sites, Port Stephens draws large numbers of whale-seeking visitors each winter, with local cruise operators meeting the growing demand and each scoring close to a 100 per cent sighting rate on every departure during the area’s extended whale-watching season from May to November.

Situated 2½ hours north of Sydney, Port Stephens and its marine park sit right next to the migration path of the humpback whales. Dubbed the ‘Humpback Highway’, the route is used by more than 17,000, 40-tonne humpback whales each year as they migrate north up the coast to breed and then return back to Antarctic waters later in the year. The number of whales seen off Port Season is increasing annually.

Whale-watching cruises aboard Imagine Cruises depart Port Stephens at 10.30am and 2pm, lasting about three hours and leave from the Nelson Bay marina opposite the Nelson Resort.
