Come Fly with Us at Six Senses Laamu Aerial yoga available in the Maldives for the first time

As science continues to reveal the many benefits of yoga, we turn to variations of this centuries-old
philosophy in pursuit of a range of goals.

The more dynamic moves of vinyasa stretch and strengthen the body, while bikram yoga promises health originating from the inside as toxins are sweated out in a temperature controlled studio. There are also more spiritual yoga styles for those aspiring to deeper goals and connections than just a finely toned body.

Today, aerial yoga is fast becoming the hottest trend in the world of yoga, bringing together stretching, breathing and meditation with gymnastics and aerial arts. Now available at Six Senses Laamu, it uses a hammock, made of a soft and supple parachute-silk fabric, which is suspended from the ceiling and used to support the body weight during a sequence of postures.

Aerial yoga shares the mind-body connection principles of the traditional yoga practice, while the weightlessness helps remove compression from the spine and opens up joints, leading to stress and tension release. Additional benefits include muscle strengthening and lengthening, low impact cardiovascular conditioning, increased mobility, deeper body awareness and self-esteem. In addition, it adds an entirely new dimension to each individual’s yoga practice and stimulates the release of happy hormones.

Performed in a sequential flow to music, Six Senses classes are tailored to specific guest’s needs and incorporate levitating meditation, zero-compression inversions, sun salutations, floating savasana and joint opening moves.  Great attention is paid to the technique and accuracy of each pose to ensure maximum benefits on physical and emotional levels.  Movements between poses should flow and the mind should focus on the present moment, allowing reconnection with yourself and the world around you.

Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, aerial yoga offers endless opportunities to exercise the way to well-being.

Certified by Ay Fly Training, the resort’s Yoga Teacher Elle Fernandes is a pro when it comes to tailoring classes to individual needs.  More challenging acrobatic poses including a workout and stretching are offered to guests with strong stamina and higher fitness levels. Those who prefer a more relaxing pace or wish to deepen their practice can enjoy gentler and more meditative and rehabilitative versions of aerial yoga.

There are also classes focused on stretching and suspended Pilates, taking core-strengthening and targeted muscle conditioning to new heights. Alternatively, calm the mind in a comfy cocoon position in a personal virtual space.

Individual classes - $85 per person
Group classes - $35 per person
